I have a 1991 350SDL with 115K miles that has front wheel shake starting at 55mph, stops at 60 returns at 75-80. Tires are new factory spec Michelins.Problem first showed up at 75K miles(had car since new). Mechanic says all front end parts are ok. Tires and wheels are not out of round.Have been balanced at differtent shops several times with same results.

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

ezrider,
Sometimes the W140, W129, (hence 500E) wheels with the large tires on them can be tricky to balance. The solution to that is to find a shop that can high-speed balance your wheels/tires on your car. I've personally seen "normally" balanced wheels tires shake slightly at certain speeds but be absolutely vibration free from high-speed on-car balancing. Call your local tire shops and speed shops and find one who offers high speed on-car balancing. Where do you live? Perhaps someone can chime in and recommend a place in your location.

Hope this helps...Lee

ezrider,
I was having an unsolvable vibration on my W126 also. I tried different tires (including Michelin) and wheels, and on the car balancing, but nothing worked. Then I had the steering gear box rebuild and the vibration went away. The fluid was never changed before the rebuild and the fluid was very gritty. My mechanic and I think that the steering vibration was due to the gritty fluid that transmitted an uneven message to the steering wheel.

Anyway, if you have never changed the steering gear box fluid, it needs to be changed and the vibration problem may go away also. On car balancing is alway a good idea for the most even ride possible.
