Question w126 Wheels - offset question

Now I am really confused. I have been looking for 16" wheels for my 85 500SEL. I have been told that I need an offset of 25mm or so - But the wheels I am looking at are all 7.5" or 8". Do I need a smaller offset to make up for the wider wheel? What are the offsets of some of the wider wheels you are running?
Thanks
Dave

offset

a wider wheel with the same offset would push the limits in both directions. more wheel/tire inboard and outboard. example going from 6" to 8" wheel with same offset gives you 1" of more tire/wheel in both directions.

search yahoo for "wheel offset" to find several good sites with detailed explanations and diagrams. one even has a automatic calculator for various sizes and offsets. i think TireRacks site has good info as well.

just be glad you got rid of the bimmer if it had 390mm TRXs like my 535 did! i switched to 16" in that application.

w126 wheels

I think the numbers your being told are the rim width which are followed by the letter J, offsets are not normally that low.

88 420sel w126

hello

i'm with dave1. the biggest problem i see with this offset stuff. everybody seems to say something different.

i mean that if all your shots are scattered how do you adjust your sights.

one guy says 18 x 8" wheels of a certain kind ok at 15 offset. another guy says nope won't work need 20 offset. i mean really that is only 5mm or .197 i'm talking here of 1 hair over 3/16". and this goes on and on.

wider tires different offset i need to get this figured out before i start questioning do i want to give up any ride comfort by going with an 18 x 8 with a 235 x 40 x 18. or will the handling gain be enough to pass on the softer ride. then i want to put some new springs in which i see will drop the car 1 to 1 1/2 inches. now what do i do.

it's almost enough to convince me to stay with my stock setup.

is there an easy answer.
