Is alignment needed when changing rims?

Hi All,

I have a new set of rims and snow tires for my ML55 that are about to go on. At the same time, I'm having my steering rack changed out and will need an alignment and will have the new rims and snows on the car. I will be remounting the AMG rims in the spring with a fresh set of rubber...normally new tires all the way around means I'll do an alignment. Is that needed again?

Shouldn't matter in my opinion...just wondering what you all think.

New Winter rims 17" with Blizzaks 255/60/17
My factory rims are AMG with 285/50/18

I bought everything at Tire Rack...here are the rims Click Here
and SLK wheel center caps.

Thanks,
Shaun

Changing from one set of wheels to another shouldn't require an alignment - however in our traffic calming modern worlds full of Belgian paving and speed humps perhaps it is worthwhile considering if the cost of new tyres greatly exceeds that of an alignment cost.

Alignment does not however mean that you have to get someone else to do it - do a search on this forum and you'll find loads of tips and tricks for checking it yourself.

Shaun, changing wheels is no reason for having an alignment done, presuming the alignment was fine beforehand.

I have several sets of wheels for several different cars and I never align between swapping wheels. If you notice pulling it may be that the tires air pressure has dropped while they were sitting in the back of the garage.
