Why are my wheels weird?
I used to have 4 normal wheels. Somewhere along the line I got a flat tire, put on the spare, which is missing the Mercedes logo center piece. There's just an open 3" or so hole there.
I ultimately bought a tire and rim from someone, had never been used. Same style rim, but I had it put on today, and same thing, it's missing the center piece, plus the bolts stick out by maybe 1/2", rather than being recessed in like my other 3 wheels. (sort of like the belly button is out, rather than in). What is up with this? jeff 1991 300d, 137k |

There is a plastic center piece that pops off the wheel (from the back - I use the wooden handle on my hammer). The spare doesn't have it because the monting bolt in the trunk goes through that space. They are called center caps and they're not very expensive.

Probably a different offset value, but very similar/identical design.
The W124 had similar wheels from the W126, which can be mistaken for either until the offset is known and the correct one is chosen. Check the offset and part numbers.

You bought the wrong wheel, wrong offset. Bad. Find your old wheel, pop a new center cap in it, ... or the one from your old wheel.

I just had a problem like this come up. My mom's 300sd had the incorrect wheels when we bought it. They worked fine with the wrong offset, but the tie rods only clear the rim by about 1/8 inch. The tie rod ends ended up rubbing as they got loose. I replaced the tie rod ends but they still rub under hard cornering. Not to threadjack, but anyone know where to buy some real thin wheel spacers?

I don't understand

The wheel itself fit the bolts on the axle fine, so I assumed it was fine to put on the car. Is that not the case? Thanks, jeff |

If you look at the back of the wheel, there is a part number, which I'm guessing starts with 201 and should be 124. The original wheel on your '91 should be ET48, a flat-face 15-hole (rectangular holes) wheel. Compare the shape of the holes, the 126 wheel has rounded corners on the holes as does the '86-'89 124 wheel where the '90-'93 124 wheel has squared corners in the holes like the 201 and R129 wheels.
