03 500sl 17 inch rims on my 300cd

Not sure I wanted these rims ,got them any way ,they fit kinda of.The fronts barely mis the upper control arm ,really close. How much room does the tire need from this piece of the suspension before being a problem .Its tight ,meaning 3 mm or soo.I could get a spacer for more comfort ,what space would be recommended?

That is what I have on my SL. You will need to watch that the lug bolts you use aren't so long that they damage the paring brake.

Also, you should be aware that these wheels have 14mm bolts and your car, I think, has 12mm bolts. There is a slight difference between the 12mm and 14mm ball seats as well.

If the rims came from a mercedes car and are not of the chromed disco spheres that people call rims these days ,I think Im doing the car a justice .Im in the interest of a more tasteful look for the car ,at least thats what Im aiming for.

Biggest difference is in the offset.

Bolt circle and hub should be the same.

W123 rims should be around 25mm.

SL rims are around 49mm.

This puts the rims further in, making an issue for suspension clearance.

Also may look a bit goofy, a knock-kneeded look. Spacers should be used.

The offset checked to be 35 on these rims, the 300d is 25 and 30 depending on steel or bunt. Its the width of the rim that puts it into tire to suspention area I believe. It makes sense ,these cars were not engineered for 8.5 inch rims ,I pretty much counted on having problems ,just want the right fix the first time.

I have 17 inchers on my TD...17 inch rims clear the tie rod by default b/c of the large interior diameter. But the inside corner of the tire comes perilously close to the UCA fastener. The clearance on mine is 7/16, its a little close for comfort, but I hate the idea of spacers. So I might clearance that fastener by 1/8 of an inch and call it good.

I think the car looks great w/ 17s.

Personally, I think larger/newer wheels look silly on a W123, if I was going to change anything I would go to steel wheels and painted wheel covers. Also, I don't like using spacers on any wheels; so if I was going to change I would buy wheels with the correct offset. You should do what you think works on your car.

how about some pictures? Also, its your car and I am of like mind when it comes to the bundts, I just dont like the look or the 14" size. As far as spacers, properly installed with locktight and torque they are plenty safe. I have had a set on my Jeep for two years and they take everything I dish at them. Problem with spacers is that they make a cheap wheel not so cheap, A good set of spacers will cost you $200.

I think bigger wheels look good depending on the design. The W123 has a huge area under the fenders and the stock 195/70/14 look pretty funny.

My 123 wagon has wheels off a current C class which look pretty slick with the low profile tires.
