Tire Iron on a 300D /TD Where Is It?
Both of my cars came with jacks however I cant find the tire iron. After getting a flat last night I started wondering if both cars just happened to have them missing or I am a blind fool?

On my wagon, the tire iron is in a red fabric 'roll up' tool bag inside the spare tire compartment. However, I don't know if thats stock, or was put there by a previous owner.
peace, sam

I assume by "tire iron" you actually mean lug wrench. It should be in the cloth roll-up tool kit. (Tire irons are those flat-tipped bars that one uses to break the bead and lever the tire off over the rim. Most of us use tire shops that have powered equipment to do that job now.)
The tool kit in my '55 Austin-Healey came with a pair of tire irons in it. Of course, it also has a wooden dowel with a suction cup on the end so that you can lap in the valves when you pull the head for de-carbonizing every 15,000 miles...... ![]() |

They are available. I'm sure Phil can get you one. But if you have the funds, you might want to get a torque wrench for the trunk. If you tighten the bolts too far, they can stretch, and they aren't cheap. Not exactly the price of gold, but still - special bolts and not cheap.

Here's a tip:
You don't need to gorilla your wheels on. If some ape-man at the tire shop has done so (ask them not too, nicely), then you'll want to undo them at home, and then redo them to the right torque, it just takes a minute, and you won't be unbelievably frustrated trying to change the tire in the middle of the night in the rain on the side of an interstate, which is, of course, when you will have your next tire problem. I use a 36" breaker bar to loosen the bolts, and then use a Harbor Freight 1/2" torque wrench (15$ on sale) to put them back on at 90ft/lbs. Not as hard as you might think, really! That way they can actually be removed by a human being using a shortish wrench, and won't damage the wheels or lug bolts, but still won't come off on their own. peace, sam

The Mercedes lug bolt wrench has a small handle. Someone told me that the handle was designed to allow just enough leverage to torque down the bolts
to spec. old wive's tale???
