starting variability

My 1987 SL 560 (96k mileage) which is generally in excellent condition, starts smoothly, hitting on all cylinders on the first cranking of each day; and after being shut down several hours.

Otherwise, it runs very rough after cranking, until I give it some gas, then it smooths out, and will run like a scalded dog.

Is this an injector or injector pump problem? or something else?

Thanks for any suggestions.
