94' SL500 soft top problem
hi all,
My '94 sl500 soft top will not operate. The red button will blink but no sounds and the soft top wont come out of the compartment. The roll bar does not work either. Fuse #6 is good. roll bar and soft top are currently down. Bobterry, if you are still active on this site, your opinion would be greatly appreciated. ray |

you have some very helpful posts. thanks read most of the threads...not sure how to read the error codes. my diagnostic port has no numbers and there is a pig tail next to it that has button, an led and two ports. all fuses ok..checked the oil in the pump..ok. looked at the soft top controller..looks ok..manually opened the compartment hood cleaned the one "switch" on the drivers side. can i send you a couple pics of the diag port and pigtail? thanks |

My vehicle is a '91. On my car the connector is under the hood on the passenger side up against the firewall under the large cover held down by 4 or 5 ( I forget ) large philips head screws. The mono valve and OVP relay are in there too. There are ( I believe ) 3 different versions of the top controller. 90 thru 93, 94+95, and 96 and later. The 96 and later can be reset by syncing the windows, but errors can only be read by a scan tool. 90 thru 93 are the simplest, but most troublesome as well. The 94 and 95 are similar to the early models but don't present as many error codes at the diagnostic connector. Be sure you actually measure the fuses in the trunk for the seperate windows, top controller and oil pump. They often look OK, but get corroded contacts. Have you taken a really large bump or had a rear wheel off? The micro switches for the roll bar on the rear axle can get messed up.
Don't fret. These problems can be sorted out by logical trouble shooting. In my own experience, the micro switches and fuses are far more likely to be a problem than the controller. The thread in my last post really is the best place to look for good info.

Thanks for your reply. Yup Im stumped. My diag connector is round and is probably a 38 pin connector. Its not numbered and so how do i identify pin 10 ?
I used the mb tool to get the soft top up and locked in, but everything is just dead...no leaks anywhere. wierd. roll bar is also dead. I will pull all the fuses from the trunk and replace and see what happens. tried to resync the windows..no dice. disconnected the battery in the hopes that the error codes would get wiped..but no luck. everything looks pristine but something is just dead. ill try to get any error codes. I know that led pig tail must be involved in getting codes. anything you can think of will be appreciated. ray |

I'm sorry. I sent you looking in the wrong place. The connector is not under the cover. It's in front of the cover under a flip off cap near the top of the strut mount. So many cars...I get confused.

If the codes don't help I had a similiar issue several years ago with my '90, so I may no remember all the details.
After blowing a fuse in the interior lighting system, then getting everything reset etc the top would not work. I drove it as was and after a few minutes everything came back, it's documented somewhere. You need to get the ABS etc to reset or sync up.
