Damaged SL

My indie has a 1998 SL500 with 60,000 miles and panorama roof in his shop that he's offered me for $17,850 US. It was run into a ditch and he estimates about $10,000 to fix it. I've seen some of his body and paint work and it's flawless. He has a 2005 SL65 AMG that he's working on right now that has 3500 KM and about $85,000 in damage to the front end so others don't seem to doubt his abilities.

I've posted a few pictures taken with my camera phone. Damage appears to be both bumpers, passenger side door, front fender, both wheels, front rocker panel (and everything underneath) and door sill. What do you think?

FYI, the car on the hoist is a S500 Coupe that he just did the driver's side on. Looks like brand new.....

Thanks.

Nice pics for a phone. Let's see,,,, $17,850 and another $10 grand and you get a car that is worth right around 25K to 28 K for,,,,, 28K. That is IF his estimate falls in line. The crack in that right front wheel would probably involve some suspension or steering damage, and I wonder if that has been taken into consideration. I have been in the autobody business for 22 years and I don't buy wrecks and fix them up,,,, even for myself. Reason is that if you really do it right, you will always have the same or more in the car than if you went out and bought a good one. Cars are called junk after being wrecked for a reason. There was recently a 500 E on EBay that was hit in the left front. Just by the pictures, I could see at least 5K worth of damage. The car was worth,,, if it wasn't wrecked, right around 15K. It sold for almost 10K,,,, I'll never figure it out.

I'm with PJG....move along and buy one that hasn't been in an accident. The underside may not be damaged but it may not be the same either.

But pick up the pana roof if he'll separate.

Exactly what I said,,,, back on the road, but is it safe ? But that doesn't really matter as long as people see me in an SL.

Run don't walk...

Away from it....you can get a very very nice lower mileage SL for $25K so why take the chance......

Try to grab that pano top first before you run! That is a nice option and if you have an SL or are going to get one it can be fitted to it. For 17k you can get an older SL with fewer miles on it already in one piece! Good luck!

He's not going to part it out so getting the roof is not possible. I decided to wait and see if he sells it before the work is done. If not, maybe I'll revisit it once he's finished it off and has a firm price.

Thanks for all of your input.
