R129 - Soft top hydraulic fluid
The MB part number is 000 989 91 03 - does anyone know the recommended manufacturer and grade/specs?
Just discovered mine is quite below the min line and so I want to suck the remaining out and pump in some new. Cheers Lea _____

I once tried to reverse-engineer the fluid. The best I could find is that it's a high-quality hydraulic fluid. The stuff from the dealer is made by Pentosin.
I caution you from using anything other than dealer-supplied fluid. The hydraulic cylinders are $125 each and there are six of them for the unit. I'd hate to put anything in the system that degarades the seals. I had to replace a cylinder on my unit. I sure as heck wasn't going to add any fluid that I wasn't sure of its compatibility.

Agreed. Stick w/OEM on this one. The mechanism is complicated enough w/o having inferior or incorrect fluid to add to the problems.
I've replaced both front cylinders a year apart of each other, but I believe these are a common R129 failure...

Who would figure that mercedes will change the number for the hyd fluid from one year to the next. You will have to buy it for the year of your car wich it will be a diferent number than the year before.

i oredered a bottle of the 001-989-20-03-10 the parts guy at mercedes said it is what they use for the newer cars, he also mentioned the two were compatible, i would use the 000-989-91-03-10 since the car is older than 1998 |

Thanks for the replys guys.
I agree with ensuring the use of the correct grade hence this post, however I was hoping that the bottle supplied by MB has the OEM detail printed so to make an easy cross check - but I guess not. It was expense really that made me think of locating the OEM as I've heard this fluid is very expensive; however 36USD/litre isn't too bad at all so I guess it's time to enquire down at my local dealer. BTW - MB documentation mentions 1.25 litres for the 'Hydraulic Soft Top' but 1 litre for 'Mechanical Soft Top' - the page references the W124 too. Can anyone shed dome light on the difference between these and I assume I need 1.25L? Cheers Lea

Popped into the dealer today and it turns out to be a no-brainer - 8GBP (16USD) per litre! Part number 000 989 91 03 10 was supplied for my '93 car.
The container has the marking 'Hydraulic Fluid ZH-M' but Google doesn't really reveal much. Guess it's not really an issue now anyway. Cheers Lea

It depends on what you want to pay. But you will need 2 Liters to do a complete flush renew
