380SL Poor Acceleration
As a new owner, my 1982 380SL runs fine but doesn't seem to have any guts as far as acceleration. Is this typical of the big V-8 or might there be a problem I need to address?
It will not exceed 2,000 rpm during take-off unless I downshift to 1st gear to get the rpm's up. I would appreciate any comments/suggestions. Thanks. |

Your throttle links are most likely out of wack. There's one right near the throttle body, if you shorten it, it should give you more kick. Also check the kick-down switch under the gas pedal.

I am having this same problem with my 82 500 SL along with a shaky idle. Any other suggestions?

Check your timing at 3000 rpm. If the centrifical advance is sticky from grease turning to gel the acceleration can be slow.

Problem solved! My throttle linkage plastic bushings (near throttle plate) were worn. I replaced them and adjusted the shift linkage. Wow, the car has been totally transformed. The acceleration is potent and now she likes to rev.
