Hamilton is on old American brand that became famous for pocket watches that were used by the railroads to keep time after the establishment of time zones. It is now owned by the Swatch Company, and is made in Switzerland with Swiss movements. I like wearing a Hamilton because it has cache: few people seem to know about the brand. It also bears distinction in that our soldiers wore Hamiltons in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.
Any pics or links to that style of Hamilton?

Which style? The one that I have (that looks exactly like the pic you posted?

Or the one that was worn during the WWII, etc. ?

Thanks, Paul.

I also browsed on Tourneau's website last evening and saw some interesting selections as well.

Bernard

I've bought watches from Bernard in Texas with good luck. Just google "bernard, watches." Check them out.

[QUOTE=suginami]It has a stainless steel bracelet, a sapphire crystal, and uses the the Valjoux 7750 movement.

There are many high-end Swiss watches that use the same movement as my Hamilton automatic chronograph, but charge 4 to 5 times as much.[QUOTE]

Very true that ETA's 7750 has become the standard workhorse of chronograph movement but...there are many different grades of 7750!

The lower priced brands use a stock movement without any extra finishing or embellishments. Others use the stock movement only as a starting point then add hours of additional polishing and decoration or new complications to increase both the efficiency and value of the watch. Once you've seen what Franck Muller and IWC do with the 7750 I'm sure you'd agree there IS a difference

That's true

I've discovered there are even some very high quality knock-offs which use the 7750, employ solid gold cases, and are probably about as good as the manufacturer's own movements.

Of course the best and most "collectible" watches manufacture their own movements rather than buying the base from Valloux or some of the other caliber manufacturers.

Even Patek Philippe uses Lemania choronograph movements! Remember the older Valjoux calibre 88 and 72? Some still consider them the best ever made. Of course, Blancpain uses Piguet movements. Even the so-called manufacturers, those that make in-house movements, use specialty companies like Dubois-Depraz to design the prototypes. Movement designers are the rock-stars of the watch industry and Ludwig Oeschlin is the reason why Ulysse Nardin has improved so much over the past few years. One thing I've learned about the watch industry is that nothing is as it seems

I've never heard that before

Everything I've ever read or been told about Patek was that they manufacture ALL of their own movements. Audemars Piguet, too.

I agree, Ludwig Oeschlin is a real "rock star" class movement designer. The Freak watch is amazing and is a fantastic demonstration of what is possible with modern technology.

Well, a little more reading wouldn't hurt Patek calibre 27-70 as used in their chronograph models 5004, 5070 and 5970/3970 are all based on Lemania movements which come to Patek as modules and are then embellished and tuned in-house. Been like that for 30 years. TimeZone.com has a great online forum for watch fans that includes brand-specific history and chat. I'm sure you'd enjoy a visit

Job's in danger!

Dean, I'll have to quit my job, if I get involved in anymore forums. This one seems to keep me pretty busy. Thanks for mentioning it, though. I used to go there periodically, but haven't lately.

Me too

I have two Breitlings, too, Tom. I've got a Chronomat GT and a Chronoavenger. I would love to have one of the Bentley's.

In spite of all that, they still aren't in the same class at the GP's, Vacherons, and Pateks.

My grandmother always said to buy the very best you can afford, because over the long run it will cost you less. I've stuck with her philosophy and, like many of you out there, have collected many fine things including, of course, Mercedes automobiles.

My other passion is Swiss wristwatches and I am wondering if others share the same hobby? I like to practice a form of pop psychology and guess a person's characteristics by the watches (and cars) they own.

Anyone out there want to continue this thread?

I agree with your grandmother Dean. It only makes sense that those of us that appreciate a quality car would enjoy other luxury iitems. I own a Rolex Daytona and wear it everyday. I am not a collector but wear this watch all the time. I am very happy with my Rolex.
