500E smoking when floored..why?

I was driving home from work today in my 500E, when i was gettin on the freeway i floored it and noticed that at high RPM's it throws some smoke. It wasnt smoking unless I got it up to higher RPM's and I could only see it with the assistance of the light from the car behind me. Anyone have any idea why it would do that? The car has been recently tunes up with new plugs, distributer caps and rotors. Other than that and the problem of my car going into limp mode when I get on the gas pedal from time to time it runs fine. Any advice as to what to look for? Maybe it's time for an oil change?

You sure you have tires left? :p

Sorry, couldn't resist...anyway, I would think that if you could only see it when backlit from another car's headlights, it could likely be perfectly normal. Although I haven't specifically notice this in my E420.

FWIW, I know diesels in a high state of tune will smoke very little (hardly noticeable, if at all) during the day, but appear to smoke signifigantly when illuminated by headlights at night...

- Ryan

dieseldude I have some tires left but not very much. i am looking to change the stocks soon so I will work these as much as I can . And the funny thing is my tires were new just 3 weeks ago when I defeated the ASR

would replacing the chip have anything to do with it? I changed it about two weeks ago. But I would agree that it seems normal.

vcci,

That is called an Italian Tune Up! If the car has sat for a while or doesn't get opened up regularly you will get carbon deposits in the engine. These deposits are burned off when you punch the throttle and let the RPM's go up.

If you find it is occurring regularly you might want to check your oil levels to insure the engine isn't burning any oil.

The smoking could be due to many reasons.

Could be some or one "loose" piston head or bad fuel distributor.

The carbon build up is immense that after a few steps of "Italian tuning" you might find the engine a lot easier without the visible smoke from the driver's position. Through time, the carbon builds up again and there you have the smoking acceleration.

One suggestion was to use synthetic oil before switching back to your usual oil.

Suggest having a qualified tech do a complete check up for you.

Mine sits for months - never smokes on start-up or at WOT.

Worse case, the motors internals could be a bit worn= oil burning- - after all its a '92?

Good luck

Valve Guides maybe

my high milage 92 400E(192K mi) does this. I use Mobil 1 religously in the motor since new and maintain it really well. Did the timing chain and all that stuff. Had the fuel injectors cleaned and it now seems to do it a little less, but still at 11years of Texas heat, my lead foot and ~200K mi, its just a little winded. Still runs like a scalded ape though
