E500 Thermostat Question
Last night here in Dallas it was in the around 36-38 deg. I drove the car 18 miles mainly on the freeway 70-80MPH. The engine temp never exceeded about 70C even when I got off the freeway and hit the side streets to my house (2 miles). This seems kinda cool to me. What temp are our thermostats? Do you think mine could be stuck open a bit? TIA,

I'm interested in the replies to this as well. I have to drive on the Highway at about 70 to 80 mph and the car doesn't get warm enough, it stays stuck at 65-70 or so. The average temp around here is about 4 to 5c deg.

In SF Bay Area Temps (ambient 50-90 degrees) = consistent 85 -90 degrees (w/ a/c or not) Car warms up to full operating temp in about 5-6 minutes of driving/ 2 miles. (Water Wetter, MB Coolant, Guido's Cool Harness) best regards -fad |

Just had the t-stat replaced in my E420 (simliar warm-running characteristics as your modified M119) which fixed the same issue - rarely getting up to 80C even after extended idling. Get it looked at immediately as an engine running too-cool can cause severe damage quickly.
See my recent post "M119 Running Too Cool?" For other repsonses on the same subject. Regards, - Ryan

I will replace the thermostat. Went downtown for lunch (15 miles), car stayed at 70deg. and moved up while I was tooling around the parking garage but would move right back down again as I hit the road. Thanks for the help,

How much was the thermostat? It would be a good thing to have in the trunk, since I don't know when or if mine has ever been replaced.

Hey Tom,
I just replaced mine as well, same problem. The cost for the part is something like $50 - $60 dollars and labor is minimal.

I got mine here at Fastlane. Think it was $24 or maybe $29. Its easy to access so you can DIY or a tech wouldn't charge much.

MB thermostat was $29 from Caliber Motors. Comes with a 1-year warranty on PARTS and LABOR to replace the thermostat, AND anything else that a failed thermostat may cause.
