Does anyone tinker with the m272?

I've been exploring different Mercedes engine options for my w108 track car. The idea of a m272 came up from a 2011 GLK. Has anyone swapped these engines before or used a standalone ecu (like megasquirt) on them?

My biggest concern isnt fitment but getting the variable intake runners and swirl motors to behave if I were to run it on a standalone. I cant imagine the engine playing well with its stock ecu and partial harness in a w108.

I'd never own one in a passenger car, much less a performance application. Seen a low miler with cracked piston and another with bent valves from over rev.

Maybe think twice about hot rodding an engine the manufacturer settled a class action over.

Haven't messed with those engines but this thread got me thinking of these new engines from Mercedes. M176, M177, M178.These have turbos tucked between the heads and may make a twin turbo installation a little easier for retro fits. Especially considering that displacement is now going down these may be a nicely sized package that will go anywhere.

They're cheap and I've seen many of a reliable engines do the same from over-rev at low miles. Thanks though.

Do you have a thread on your 300ce build? I have a m104.980 in my 190e Sportline.

I found a solution for the swirl motors to eliminate them all together. m014 manifold swap.

For the variable runners, I'm sure MS can handle. I'm just looking for anyone with experience. Seems not to be any.

Think there might be a connection between "class action" and "cheap"?
Think there might be a connection between "class action" and "no experience"?
There is, however, a lot of aftermarket experience with the M113.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I def understand all of that and I get what you emphasized in red (cute) and why. And the m113 is an option as well, which I have all the information that I need. But, I'm asking about the m272 in particular.

I'm not asking IF I should do it or not. Nor am I asking about alternative options. With that out of the way, hopefully we can encourage some replies from folks who have BTDT.

No experience but according to this, these problems should be well under control for any person willing to take on such a swap.

Thanks John. These issues certainly could be an issue for a lot of people.

The m272 I have in mind is a 2011 with 90k miles on it.

Outside their problem areas, has anyone used them in a swap or ran a standalone ecu on one?
