Post New AMG Hammer Article

There seems to be a lot of interest in the early AMG Hammer conversions so I've posted an AutoWeek story from June of 1986 on my website under the More 500E Articles link.

The Hammer was introduced in 1985 at the Frankfurt Auto Show and AMG went on to manufacture 13 cars over the next two years. Interest from the USA was very high and AMG launched a major expansion of their distributorships from two to 80 in 1986.

Leading the charge overseas was a slightly different Hammer...a less expensive, less custom 5.6 liter 300-series sedan that could be assembled faster to meet anticipated American demand. Of course, the demand never materialized and AMG retreated back across the ocean after a few years.

This AutoWeek article was very interesting to me because the author, David Barry, really captured the feeling of driving at warp speeds in a very competent car. The car's specs and performance also confirm that the later factory 500E was every bit as good (better in some respects) as the AMG version. But thanks, AMG, for pushing M-B into action!

Dean,

Thank you for the articles. A while back, rpm8100 on benzsport.com sent me a few scans from an AMG Hammer brochure. You might find them interesting enough to include on your page:

Hey Duck Muck,

First off...thanks for the awesome info on the Hammer.

Do you know if the Hammer used the same seats as the stock or something more sporty?

Without the flared fenders how did they fit a 8" wide wheels into the body?

Good info and pics!

When I was in high school in Mpls, MN -- the owner of "Byerly's" grocery store (high end and expensive small chain) owned a Hammer wagon. The only time I ever saw one... Wonder what happend to it?

Ren, I'm sure they rolled or radiused the fenders.

Nice cars, but too skinny

Has anyone ever seen or heard of a Wide Body ever prowling the streets or autobahn??

E50 Article

Dean,

We all thank you greatly for providing us access to the wonderful compilation of materials on our 500E/E500 cars. Your site is a treasure!

There is another AutoWeek article you might consider including: This is the review of the E50, but I found the reference to the 500E quite refreshing. AutoWeek 05/13/96 (Vol 46, Iss. 20, Pg. 18).

"(the E50)...will fall short of the 500E in the category of lacking an edge. The 500E was something special, a brutish, beastly Mercedes-Porsche, perhaps the ultimate tuner sedan. Maybe it was the influence of Mercedes' cross-town partner. Porsche didn't just assemble the car. It breathed in life, and there was a thrilling wildness, an edge to the car, just as there was to a 911 Turbo of the same generation."

Kind regards,
Bob

AMG Catalogue

I have that same AMG brouchure. It depicts several AMG Models incl 190,300 "HAMMER" and an SEL. Very nice pics indeed. I also have a catalogue which has AMG part numbers for converting then W124 bodys9sedan and wagons) into AMG homologations.
I actually purchased my first AMG pieces(duck spoiler and front air dam from AMG West then in Chicago(W. Ogden) right before they went OOB in '93. Alas i have no scanner to share this wonderful treasure with the world

Aldedmon...when I see something called "Sweet E", I just naturally think it must be illegal and look away ;-)

Wonderful pics - do you have any advice/pointers on attaching the rear spoiler?

Rear Spoiler

Its not too difficult.
The first time the deal (MB) Installed it using Black Silicon. It didn't hold very well and after about 8 months I returned to have it reattached. By now MB dealers were marketing these AMG accessories. This next time they attached it using a some type of very thin "rubber based" two sided tape. They peeled, applied it to each spoiler piece, and then peeled the remaining tape and applied it to the car which shld be first clean with isopropyl alcohol. As you are aware MB now carries/can order this Spoiler.
They should also be able to order "the installation kit".

Anyone have any pics of the W201 with the Hammer engine?

Interesting... seems that a 5-speed manual was offered in spring of 1988 . Was anyone aware of that?

AMG should really put pics and info on the Hammer and the other one-off cars they made on their site.
