exhaust manifold flanges.
I wanted to put this out there for anyone. I am making headers for my car and will be getting flanges made. Anyone want a set? I am using 3/8" thick stainless. They will either be laser or waterjet cut. I am doing this in the next couple of days so speak up if you want some.

I am having the first set made. I think they should be around 150.00+ materials. So less than 200.00 total. A little less if more are made.

dang, is that how much they typically run for 6 flanges?
are you going to use gaskets as a template? fudge. I am tempted to cut off the stock ones. why not go that route? (sorry I never I taken any engineering classes)

My assumption is that Whipple is going with 2 flanges covering 3 ports each. That's typically how an inline 6 cyl is done. When I had my turbo adaptor flanges waterjet cut it cost right at 300$ for the 4 pieces. I can vouch that 150$ for two is a reasonable price and Whipple is not trying to stick it to anyone.

The cost is pretty much straight what it costs to do this as a one off. If I run a batch it would be cheaper. But without running and hundred not by much. The stainless is not cheap either.
I actually cut off stock manifolds to start but found the work involved to get them cleaned up to start welding new pipe in was to much. I could spend 10hrs cleaning old ones up or just make new ones. Time is money. I might run off 3 sets because my buddy wants me to make him some headers and I could sell one set or keep them for some other car project. |

Got the final quote and it was going to be 200+ materials. I am getting a qoute for 5&10. It looks like I might get down under 150 per set. I was thinking of just running at least a set of 5 but will go 10 if enough interest. I can probably speak for 3 right now. I am making some headers for a friends 190 with a 3.6 swap after I get mine done. I might do 2 sets.

Well I am going to see how many hours labor I end up with and total material cost. RIght now if I had to take a guess I would say around 1500-1700. It kind of depends how sexy they are too. I was going to try and go for equal length or at least very close and they are going to be sort of a mid length or shorty. I was planning on doing a long tube but that would be out of this world expensive and I am not sure the space is there especially with the steering drag link and idler arm in the way. I will be starting on these as soon as I have the flanges back from the cutter.

Well I got the quote back for the flanges. I can go 200.00 including shipping in the lower 50 in the U.S. for a set if anyone wants. I am going to run 5 sets.

so I think I found my way out of having flanges made, and a way out of constructing a turbo manifold from scratch!
this is a popular method.. and eliminates a lot of work and flows better then a log manifold and maybe just as good as a engineered turbo manifold pulse tuned. use stock manifolds. use 2inch pipe coming out of the 2 stock manifolds, curve up and connect to the collector. I just saw this method on my friends E30 bmw 325i , he just fit in a 535 3.5liter 12valve motor and it looks good!

The problem with the stock manifolds is that they have around a 1.5" exit at the down pipe. This is simply not enough for high hp. The exhaust back pressure is absurd. I have over 10psi at relatively low rpms. The manifolds are good for about 300hp at the crank max.

Well I ran off 5 sets. Turned out pretty nice. Perfecte fit for the 1 7/8 primaries I am using. A little port matching if I want and away I go. Like I said 200.00 if anyone wants a set.

Headers
Well started laying out stuff today. Had to order a few more pieces and some straight pipe. So far I am in this in materials to about 900.00 give or take.
I will see how much I end up using. Fit on the 1.78 pipe to the flanges is nice and tight and welds up easy. The layout is going to be hard. Not a lot of room and I am trying to get close to equal length. This will be an education in patience that is for sure. |
