Overdrive for an old 300E
Before I order a replacement trans I would like to know if anyone has knowledge of using a newer overdrive trans behind the 103 engine. 3000 RPM for highway speed seems excessive. My Buick runs 1600 RPM at 60MPH and is about the same size car. Engine life and fuel consumption could be greatly extended if that ole six could slow down a little.

The only MB trans with overdrive that would fit is the 722.5 that came in the 300SL & 300SE/S320. This trans is computer controlled & also longer than the regular auto trans. WOULD take a bunch of bucks$$$$$$.

Actually I was gona ask the same question. The transmission on my 90 300E is dead and Im getting a rebuilt transmission soon. It works fine in the streets, but when it falls in overdrive in the freeways, it just wont work anymore. I can press the gas all I want and the RPMs go up, but the car just wont move.
So now Im forced to drive in 3 when Im in the freeways, and its ridiculous because Im at like 4,000-4,500 RPMs going 60 miles an hour. Quotes Ive gotten for a rebuilt transmission have ranged anywhere from 2,300-3,000. But my dad's friend sent us to this guy who is gona do it for 1,200. Here's a nice price on an 86 300E transmission if youre interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=599175159 |

My tranny did the same thing bobby, 4th gear clutch pack was gone.
My mech rebuilt mine for $1700, that included changing all fluids in car, including diff fluid, power steering, radiator, oil, and of course trans, and brake fluid. I also had him install my springs at the same time he was doing the tranny. So all in all I figure my tranny cost me around $1300-$1500 not too bad if you ask me. And it shifts so smooth and silky now. Alon
