Note on the 1st page:
"Made in Stuttgart until 1993 . . ." was it really not made by PORSCHE after 1993, or was it moved from Zuffenhausen to another Porsche plant?

Neil - thanks for the great article posting.

My E500 is a 1994 with a build date of September 1993. The article may have been somewhat liberal in the statement of manufactured through 1993 - mine was indeed built at the Porsche works (verified when I was there for a factory/museum tour last year). There has been significant discussion on where the 1994 model year was made, I believe they were all made by Porsche.

My understanding is that the E500 continued to 1995 and possibly to early 1996 but for sale only in Europe.

Also, since MB was already making the 400E (and all the modifications to handle the M119 engine, and upgraded suspension, per the 400E article posted) on Mercedes' own assembly-lines, perhaps MB had room and experience now to make the E500 . . .

Wow Neil. Very cool. Hey what did you end up doing with the coil springs. Let me know.

Have you been reading my post Neil. I found this guy from Berlin germany. He's got the Bosch and Hella's Euro's. Im trying to get a few of the guys to buy in so this guy can give us a break on the Euro's.

Take Care Guido.

I haven't done anything with the springs, because I'm waiting for you to send me their spring rates (front & rear).

Thanks,
:-) neil

Hood way up?

Looking at the last photo in the scan of the article, "j" I think, it shows the car outdoors with the hood waaaaay up! The hood is about where it is in the engine insertion shot. Does anyone else's hood go up this high? Seems even slightly past vertical. My hood stops at a fairly shallow angle. Don't tell me all I have to do is pull it up harder?? I'm not going to try unless someone tells me!

It would be great, as having to stoop under that low hood is a pain...

Rgds,
Chris Whitney

All W124 vehicles have two hood positions:
1) normal
2) service

To gain the service position, you must activate one of the safetys on the hood-hinge to release the hood higher, and then on some models walk to the opposite hood-hinge and release the safety (a two-step process) again.

:-) neil

PS: I use this test to see how well a "tech" knows Mercedes W124's . . .

Neil is spot on...take a close look at the hinges and the base of the hood closest to the windshield (both sides) as the hood opens up...you'll be able to figure it out once they are located
