Installing a supercharger on a 190E 2.3-16

I am moving this thread from the "Hot Rod" section since it seems to fit better here.

I have acquired a supercharger off of a 1999 SLK 230 kompressor and am now in the process of trying to figure how to install it and the other components necessary to make it work effectively. This project is going slow but I will try to post progress as it made. I have finally gotten some pictures and have posted them as an ongoing record of "progress".

Cool...

Jim,
I'm glad you're making progress! Will the stock SLK output flange be usable? Looks like it's setup for a by-pass valve.

Thanks for posting the pictures

Glen ... Yes I will use the Mercedes output duct but I will need to cut the duct at the bypass port and rotate it beside the pulley and weld it back. There is not enough room for the duct between the pulley and the radiator. My initial thoughts were to mount the supercharger further back and only use one belt, the motor mount and cross member were about an inch or two too close. I also tried to mount it where the alternator was mounted but then the exhaust manifold tube from #1 got in the way. As I said, it "looks like it will fit".

It will be a several weeks before I can back into the project. Taking it "performance driving" on Nov 3. Should be fun.

Thumbs up

Jim,
Have fun on Nov. 3

Looks like I'm definitely following in your footsteps regarding forced induction! I just bought a bare Powerdyne supercharger for my 16V. Now the fun begins

I too, will post my progress...here are some pix of the supercharger: http://www.tokuhara.net/cars/190e/powerdyne/

Glen ... The blower looks beautiful! I also liked your web site, especially the picture of the girls in the pool. I am likewise a UC grad, BSME Berkeley '65. Daniel emailed me about maniford measurements for an installation of a turbo on his 16 valve. One of these days, one of us will go fast. Keep in touch.

How much boost does the SLK supercharger provide?

SV .... Tha amount of boost is determined by the relitive sizes of the drive pulleys. I am planning for 5 psi with the hopes that I don't need to change the injection system and the ignition system. The Eaton M62 blower will easily boost 10psi or more with a larger crank pulley.

That powerdyne looks huge. I wonder how much HP it is capable of handling.

Donnie,
It's Powerdyne's smallest unit, the BD-600...for engines up to 4.0 liters. Like Jim, I plan to start with about 5 to 6 lbs of boost. I chose the Powerdyne unit because it uses a quiet belt drive system, requires no oil lines, and supposedly uses a very efficient turbine.

Wish me luck!

You guys are my HEROES! Good for you! Good luck to you both. Glen, it's great you chimed right in there with Jim to provide the addeded 'pressure' of completing the project... there's no turning back now! Again, best of luck to you both, and may the best man go fastest! Kudos!

An update to my sad non-forced air induction life in my 2.3-16. After many helpful conversations with Tom Eldering (forum, not posted), we've guided e/o through the process of removing the resistor for ignition timing advance, as well as then enrichening the mixture, and the results are, well, FAST! Write me krasuskyp@firstinterbank to further discuss, not appropriate for this thread.

Drive fast... take a chance...

Fuel device

Hey Jim!

Check this site out:
http://www.angband.org/~dan/fueler.html

It's a nifty little device that enriches your mixture at high RPMs. You can set the RPMs that it kicks in at and also how much it enriches. And at $16, it's pretty cheap too

Later!

Is that your circuit design? Pretty neat! (Loved the 'stop reading here' comment in the intro.)

JCE,

No it's not, though I could have designed it myself, since I'm an electrical engineering major! It's so simple, yet gets the job done.

Later!

Dan:
Thanks for posting that link. It seems like another good option for fuel enrichment. Progress on my supercharger installation is going slow...actually I'm at a standstill. Time is in short supply
How's you EvoII conversion going?

Tell me about it!! I go to college full time and also work full time. That doesn't leave too much spare time . The kit is coming along quite nicely, though. The hood, bumpers, and front doors are done. The body of the car has 2 coats of black on it, and I'm almost done wet sanding it. I'm hoping to paint the rear doors and the body over the weekend, maybe even the trunk if I'm lucky. Then I can put the main parts on and drive my baby again, while I finish the rest of the trim pieces!

Next up: Turbo and ECU upgrade!

Later!
