1983 W123 240D - great body/interior/wheels, broken camshaft - $1000 (Tampa FL)
1983 Mercedes W123 240D. Approximately 250k on the body. It's a family hand-me-down, been in my possession since about 1994.
Pulled out the motor and rebuilt it due to low oil pressure. While the engine was out, I had the rust cut out and the whole body repainted. Had the wheels powdercoated/refinished like new. Camshaft broke about 7500 miles after the rebuild, and I don't have the heart to do anything else with it. It's been sitting in the garage since Jan 2007. Pros: - Body is in great shape, practically no rust, even in the usual places for the W123 body. - Paint was new at the time of the rebuild, only 7500 miles on the paint. Very shiny, several good new layers of single-stage creamy/yellow - Interior is in fantastic condition for a car this age - no cracks in the dash, no splits in the seats, decent sheepskin seat covers, CD player. - OEM alloy wheels were powdercoated during rebuild, they look like new except for the center caps. No curb rash, no pitting or other damage. - Tires were new at the time of rebuild, but have probably flat-spotted from sitting. - Electrical system is good. Alternator is recently rebuilt, starter is an upgrade from stock. Dunno about the battery after 2 years of sitting. - Motor only had 7000 miles on the rebuild. New pistons, new cylinder liners, new rod & crank bearings, new oil pump, the works. - Manual 4-speed transmission works great, clutch disc is recent (not new at time of rebuild though) - Almost all electrical accessories work, even the sunroof. The only thing that doesn't work is the rear power windows and the cruise control. - Rubber seals around doors and trunk are all new. Hood insulation is new. - Boxes of spare maintenance items - fuel filters, oil filters, belts, other spare parts. Cons: - Doesn't run, can't be cranked by hand. Camshaft broke on the 6th lobe from front. Don't know why, I gave it new camshaft bearings at the rebuild. - Since it's an interference engine, there might be damage to the #4 piston and valves. I haven't pulled the head to inspect it. - Vaccum system is weak, either there's a leak or the vacuum pump needs a rebuild. - A/C doesn't work (that was my next project, converting from R12 to R134a) - Rear electric windows don't work (but both fronts work fine) - Some exterior trim is not installed, but it's all still here (I had meant to take it for a professional detailing before putting the rest of the trim on) - One mild door ding, didn't severely damage the new paint but made a little dent, probably fixable with paintless dent repair. - Ignition lock sometimes sticks, replacement lock (new in box) is included but not yet installed - Can not be shipped to Nigeria, sorry Please give this car a good home. I hope you won't part it out. I know there are some good W123 motors out there living in bad bodies, so give this stately machine another chance to live. Will accept reasonable offers if you promise me you'll treat it right. I'd love to see it cruising around with a 300D turbo mated to the 4-speed manual - what a great project! NOTE the black specks are just dirt from sitting and not being washed - the paint on the hood is in perfect shape! ... and now the sad one... Last edited by ncarter; 08-25-2009 at 06:57 PM. |

Bump.
Entertaining all reasonable offers. My wife really wants it out of the garage! I'll hate to see it go, but realistically I don't think I'll ever drive it again. |

Bump. Still entertaining all reasonable offers.
One more thing that I found when showing the car to a prospective buyer: the ignition lock is sometimes sticky. I have a replacement ignition lock mechanism, still in the box, included with the car, haven't installed it though. |

Yep, still have it.
Drop me an e-mail, phone call, or SMS/text if you like - PMs through this site don't always notify me by e-mail, and I don't check this thread every day. My contact info is in the first post. I'm actually in the Brandon/Riverview area, a little bit SE of downtown Tampa proper. |
