Angry OM636

I have a friend (hard to believe, but yes, I do) who purchased a 1959 MB 190D, 121 chassis, what would be called a 190Db. It has the OM 621 engine in it. When it was delivered, the starter seemed loose and he discovered later that the starter was for a 1983 240D.

Well, the seller is apparently attempting to get him a starter but my friend discovered that in a certain number of 190D cars, there's an offset in the Zwischenflange, the intermediate steel gasket between the starter motor proper and the engine. He finally obtained one of these and discovered that his starter uses a very particular nose part, with Bosch designation 46E5. The starter he has is designated 46E32.

We are now looking to see if a OM636 starter will fit this 190 because we're having so much trouble finding the starter with this particular nose. If you didn't know the OM636 is the diesel used on the 170D and most 180D diesels. A few 180s and all 190s that were diesels got the later engine, called OM 621, used in the 190D cars and the 200 D heckflossen of the 1960s.

What I need is for a starter aficianado OR someone with a lot of time on his hands OR someone who has the inside track to the Bosch data bank to identify if:

1. The 180D starter will fit on the 190Db with OM 621 motor
2. Which other starters used the nose marked 46E5 ? What are all applications?

The guy who sold him this car is apparently notorious for taking the money and running. He's new and found this out too late. My friend also found a guy with two of these starters and tried to call him, only to find that the original seller of the car is attempting to corner the market on these, to get a little more money out of him. Nice guy, huh?

So, guys and gals, dieseler and dieselettes, can anyone help answer these questions?

Thanks,
S

Hi all

I am helping a un computer literate friend, he has just rebuilt his marine engine, and now requires a new water pump for it. Its a OM 636, anyone know where I can find one? Or stupid question, but can he use any other type of water pump on it?

Thanks

I really do not know. The way it is built it looks like a 2-cylinder version of the om636 engine. I saw an om632 mentioned on the net. I'll have to get the numbers off the engine.

It seems to be new. I'll be up there tomorrow. He did love Merecedes and boats (he designed boats for the navy). His son gave me the license plate for his 170D when he lived in England. I'll have to hang it in the garage once the weather breaks.

Any idea on where to sell this engine?

I have a spare tranny I just pulled out of a W123 that works fine. $ 175 and it's all yours. I'm in the metro Detroit area. Just picked up two more cars to do surgery on, so you can send me a private e-mail if you want the trans. I'll have more coming in March.

I was going to put a 240d and AT in a 170D but that's too much work, easier to pout the stock OM636 therein.

Here is the engines' numbers (I never did go up, so I called the owner)

it is a om636/2 serial number 632.911-000172

I'll try to get some pictures posted. This may force me to buy a digital camera. I've just been waiting for Leica to work out the bugs on their M digital camera, or I'll try to borrow some.

OM636-marine version of classic origional Merc diesel-Westfield 4x4 Lancaster UK is the place for parts for this and automobile version-they specialise in those fitted to the origional Unimogs. For those of you in Canada try Unimog specialist whose address is in Orillia,Ontario-belive its Fairgrounds Road near my brother in laws.
As for the inline injector pump some of later ones were fitted with a pressurised oil line from engine oil pump.

I am not familiar with the ins and outs of the OM 352, but I can say the OM616 is one heck of a reliable engine.
Granted the power is not as great as with the turbos, but there are plenty around.

If you really want reliability , at less power, admittedly, look at the old diesel MOG OM636 and the OM 621. Those engines worked under true combat conditions and MANY still survive today long after the cars are gone.

OM636

I got a new engine for my 170DS car, but the fork lift dinged the valve cover badly when the guy loaded it.

Anybody know where there are some old Thermo-King reefer engines that look like MBs? I could use the valve cover and oil cap off those they should fit.

Let me know by PM please.

Thanks,
strelnik

OM636

I bought a rebuilt OM636 diesel for my 170DS project and while being loaded, the hilo driver bingled the valve cover and spilled some oil.

I need a new valve cover and oil fill cap.

Anyone who has seen the old MB engines used on Thermo-King reefer units (apparently there's a pile of them somewhere in Florida?) can help me.

Or if you have one in basically any condition except mangled.

Pls send me a PM a photo and let me know.

Thanks

OM636

So, with help from people on this and other forums, I've determined that my engine is an OM636.

It came from a ThermoKing Reefer unit, not sure of the year or anything. There is an ID plate on the starter motor, but I'd have to look at it again to get any numbers off it.

There are cast stamps on the head and block area, and I've yet to see anything on the pump side.

My questions are:

How do I get more information on this motor, including service procedures, etc.?

Does anyone have a contact number or address at ThermoKing that I could get ahold of them and get some information on the motor?

How do I identify the injection pump on this engine, to make sure that I've got a pump that can handle vehicle duty and what power level it's capable of? (They came in 25-42HP versions, apparently.)

Is there a serial number on the pump that I can identify it by? Who do I call to confirm?

I have Bosch type injectors, with steel return lines, not the braided rubber things. Does that make a difference in determining HP rating?

And lastly:

HOW TO SAFELY MAKE MORE POWER!? I have a couple turbos laying around, how do I determine if a turbo is the right size for this engine, and how well will the 636 hold up to a turbo anyway?

Thermo King is not forthcoming with info on these engines, I have learned that the hard way after trying for three years.ost of the local dealers have no knowledge either, because they quit using them several years ago.

I don't know if you can turbo that engine, OM 636 is an all gear-driven arrangement with push rods for the valve train and was developed in 1949 as a reliable pumper.

In cars it never went faster than 56 mph before it destroyed itself, was used in MB 170 and 180 diesels, last year was 1958.

I think I have a spare paper manual around for this engine somewheres, in asmuch as I am finishing one for my 170DS
