Left and Right orientation/definition.

References to the left or right side of the vehicle are oriented from the driver position facing forward.

Regardless of where you are in relation to the vehicle, all references of left and right conform to this rule.

Have a great day.

I've explained this to customers many times. In the US, this mean Left is Drivers side of car, Right is Passanger side!

Is that codified in an SAE spec somewhere? I'd like to have that reference to show my boss so I don't have to refer to them as "roadside" and "curbside" in reports.

You will need to search the SAE database.

I have found this in many SAE papers.

ASE mandated this as standard reference = all branches of the US government accept only ASE certified technicians = let your boss argue with the US government over the ASE industry standard.

This is indeed the way it is - but - remove an engine from a vehicle and everything goes from the front of the engine: Turn the crank clockwise - you'll find it on the left hand side of the engine - you'll find it on the right hand side of the engine.

Convention - sometimes a pain in the arse...
