I read in CAR Magazine that Mercedes will be offering three suvs by 2004. One will be a revised M-class with a bolder, less van-like look to it. It will also be better handling and riding on road. The second is a sort of high performance suv that is like the X5. It is supposed to handle like a car and be very fast. The third(and my favorite) is a serious off road vehicle(revised G-wagen?)that will be comprable to the Range Rover. I believe the magazine said that all of these will be built in Alabama. If anyone has anymore info please post it.

You're right! I read the same article and have tried to find out more info. My MB salesman usually lets me know any inside info, but did not have much to add to this. Should be very interesting to see a really serious off roader on this side of the pond!

I also read about those 3 SUV's, but in the janruary issue of Automobile. It stated that by then, these SUV's and all other MB models will have direct injection engines, with a 4 valve a cylinder layout.

Here's some related news from the January 15, 2001 issue of Autoweek, page 4.

<<<<
M-B to sell G Wagen in U.S.

Mercedes-Benz board member and passenger car chief Jurgen Hubbert said the company's U.S. dealers will begin selling it's Gelaendewagen sport/utility vehicle before the end of the year.

Gelaendewagens have been sold here through a New Mexico-based aftermarket firm called G Wagen USA. Hubbert said Mercedes will buy out the firm and begin importing the vehicles itself.

To answer CaptAlex300e's question, yes they are gas engines.

The Direct injection gas engines are going to be very powerful. I can't wait to see how the AMG direct injection motors are going to run. Yamaha (marine outboard engine maker) came out with HPDI, high pressure direct injection engines. These powerplants are very very powerful.
