1 for every cylinder would be best, so the average of all 5 is best, where they all meet and mix

i hvae had mine in my down pipe forever with exhaust wrap,
it drop and goes up quickly, around 1k degrees it takes longr to build

i will tap exhaust soon to see the difference in readings

I believe that most readily available thermo couples ( the EGT Sensor ) are similar in design and shape

Welding a "bung" into the down pipe post turbo is simple to do. As mentioned above it gives a 300*F lower reading. The benefit is the same. You have a threshold for safety. It is said that you can be in the red about 45-60 seconds before damage occurs. So post turbo, 900-1000*F for a minute is fine if you MUST push the limits in an emergency situation.

There are also benefits to removing the turbo, manifold, EGR, etc and making sure its all clean. At that point you might as well install the TC 'pre turbo'.

Another alternative is post turbo at the downpipe upper elbow. Keep in mind that temps there will be roughly 300*F lower than pre-turbo.
Is the 300D exhaust manifold much differing from the 300D? The EGR port on the 190D Turbo is on exaust manifold and looks like it is directly in the path of the #3 cylinder right where all cylinder's exhaust joins before the turbo. In my mind this is the best location on a 190DT. Any one have other ideas on this?

It really wasn't a big deal to remove my intake/exhaust manifolds and turbo. All of the nuts just spun off, the turbo oil line was a cinch. Even the three nuts that held the exhaust elbow on were easy to remove. If you are worried, soak them all over night. It was a nice opportunity to replace the o-rings and lower gasket on the oil drain tubes too. While the manifold was off I mounted the sensor into the bottom of the exhaust manifold. The gasket set wasn't expensive from Fastlane.
