Dyno Tests

An 85 300D has an OM617.952, right? If so, here's the results from two different dyno of cars with almost identical engines as the 300D.

Marlene rides the rollers

Did you ever run Marlene again to compare the before and after of the conversion?

Not yet, Lance.

Geez. It seems like it was just yesterday when I finished that conversion; I guess because I've been really busy. SWMBO's Dad passed on at the end of April, Thing One was in town a couple of weeks in May, my side job was keeping me tapped out the rest of the time and, I've been getting ready for my trip to Australia and New Zealand.

Whew.

why then does the owner's manual have it at 123hp? lost all that power in 19 years, eh?

Good question. No doubt, the miles figure in somewhere. If you search this forum, you'll see that I've thought my wagon has ALWAYS been on the weak side compared to my sedan. But, she starts easy in all temps, pulls fine above 2000rpm and turns in mileage that's only slightly below what others report.

Remember, those data sets were gathered from chassis dynos. That's the real HP and torque where the rubber meets the road, not something off a test mule bolted to a lab dyno.

Temperature, fuel quality, engine condition, air quality, etc. There are many factors that affect performance.

You won't get a run with a steady curve and consistent hp and torque levels, ever. When the car's in the mood, its in the mood!

oh. that makes sense- hp at the wheel is always lower than at the crankshaft. and after so many years and miles probably lower still.
i was wondering though if the factory torque rating at the crank for a new car was something crazy like twice the crankshaft hp, like on the cummins turbodiesels used in the dodge ram pickup trucks.

We strapped Dad's mildly-chipped F-250 PSD to those same rollers and got something like what you describe. Methinks it was 250hp and 480 ft/lbs.
