auto tranmission problem in 1981 300d
At first, at idle, my car wanted to surge or jerk forward strongly. also,
once shifting in Low going up a hill, shift was missed and it seemed like it went to neutral instead. once under way, seems to shift ok. then now it seems like it doesn't go into first, after it. has been parked several weeks. any ideas? Is this B2 or something else? (note: this is on a 722.118 tranny). Can someone tell me if the tranny in my 1981 w123 body 300D (722.118)has the infamous B2 piston or a different version of it? anyone have the b2 piston problem in a w123 body 300D 1981 and earlier (722.118 transmission)? if so, has anyone changed theirs or had theirs go bad for 1981 300D or earlier 300D? (1982 300D and later w123 body seems to have a later 722.3xx transmission). (if so, is it part no. 107 270 04 32)? also does the 722.18 have the k1 spring mentioned for 722.3/4xx trannies? I'm at a loss what to do. if the tranny is blown or there is really a b2 piston issue in this older 722.118 transmission. thanks. Last edited by o2pilot; 06-15-2004 at 04:35 PM. |

Here is the broken B2B http://ac.unpatented.com/pics/trans/brokenb2b.jpg This is the opening where the B2B goes. That is the band where I am pushing it in with a screwdriver http://ac.unpatented.com/pics/trans/transmissionband.jpg This is what it looks like with the cover off. http://ac.unpatented.com/pics/trans/b2bpiston3.jpg Here is the mess I found in the trans http://ac.unpatented.com/pics/trans/b2bpiston3.jpg |

What you describe could be a B2B piston. I lost one on my 81SD this year. Yours should have the same trans. Usually this causes a catastrophic transmission failure. With mine it would shift into reverse and into first, then sometimes into second and third, then finally only into first. That occurred over a few days.
You can lower the transmission in place and get the B2B out. It may be busted, like mine was, or it may be cracking on that spindle. Have heard of them going in a few different ways. My previous post shows some of the photos I took of htis great adventure. I think I would at least remove it and take a look at it. It is not that hard to get to. That round inspection cover pushes in and then you remove the circlip to get it out. |
