Rear window sunshade in a W123
Does anyone have any experience using this in a w123??
I really would like to try it. It gets VERY hot in the summer inland of the Bay Area, and would very helpful when I am often times in hotter climates. My moms w202 C280 has a factory installed one, and it makes a huge difference in heat intensity, and definitley protects the interior from sun damage. In the picture its installed in a 1980's 5 Series, and just by chance I park next to one in my Garage. By looking at my car next to the 5 series it loks like it should fit. Any ideas/comments appreciated.

Why don't you get the windows tinted?

Did you try a search on this subject? I believe somebody has figured out how to fit an OEM w126 rear window shade in the w123.

In one of my previous 300Dts the windows were tinted. At first I thought I woul like it, but the decreased visibility at night was unnerving to say the least when driving in traffic. And I also disliked the loss of the open feeling W123's have with all of the big windows. It felt closed in, and compacted. I also am sensitive to movement/visibility... the tinted windows oddly enough made me feel car sick at times.
I like the window shade idea simply because having somthing that retratcs out of visibilty is a big plus. I also like having a window shade because it seems more luxurious. I will defintely search for info on the retro fitting of a w126 window shade, although it seems like it may be a more costly project. Thanks for the replies!

Well I searched and found nothing. it seems though that alot of people have problems with their electric sun shades. Manual is the way to go. I wonder if mounting a manual sunshade from another merc model will be easy.. I wonder if you can still order a manual sunshade that would be the right size for the window (w126 most likely). Id be willing to try configuring a mounting system for it without having to replace the rear shelf, but it seems like a tough project all together. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet, spend the $25 bucks for the generic manual sunshade off of ebay and see what happens.

Veloce,
I've used three different sunshade systems on two different cars relatively recently. 1.) The manual sunshade from ebay (that you referenced), I used on the family Toyota Avalon. It is very well made and works great, but it is manual rather than electric. The ebay seller was honest. Mount it to the rear deck with screws as the adhesive mounting (to the window itelf) doesn't cut it in the long run. 2.) Aftermarket electric sunshade for MB 123 or 126, I used on my 300SD (1984) for over a year. Not as high a quality as I would have liked, and required the motor "box" be mounted with ingenuity on top of the parcel shelf. Adhesive mounting of the rail bracket on the top of the window was a poor long term technique. I'd screw it to the molding if I used it again. Overall, though, I liked it because you can raise and lower it with the push of a button and it really keeps the car much, much cooler. Removed it for #3 below. 3.) The real deal OE MB electric sunshade and parcel shelf from a 560SEL swapped into my 300SD. Perfect fit, perfect mechanism, high quality. Works like a German designed mechanism should, and addresses a SoCal (SUNNNNN!) problem. Available at fine wrecking yards. ![]() Good luck. I don't think you can go wrong with the ebay one; just don't get one that's too wide. The electric ones are nice, though.

Wow.. the perfect response.
I think I am going to go ahead and get the one off of ebay. If that fails, then i'll look further into retrofitting a real OE sunshade. Will post results when they are in. Happy Motoring!
