eyeballing steering box condition

I was wondering if it's possible to tell whether a steering box has been adjusted to its limit simply from looking at how much thread is showing on the adjuster screw. I have acquired a replacement box and it appears 'tighter' in approx the straight ahead position compared to off centre. The adjuster screw is quite a way out - 5/6 threads - and the though occurred to me that someone knowledgable in these matters would be able to look at that adjuster screw and know whether it was pretty original or had been adjusted to a limit.
