Just to clarify.... from my research on black smoke and valves

1982 300tdt engine
Symptom: black smoke on accelleration

possible reasons: dirty air filter (replaced), mis adjusted alda (turned it down a bit but couldnt reach high speeds and had poor accelaeration), intake valves not fully opening, algal infection (looking for algacide now cant find anyone who has it).

anything else- weak Boost etc..?

starts up on first or second turnover idles fine as far as i can tell

thanks
will

Not sure where you are located. Try a West Marine or Boat US store.

Does low compression always equal hard starts, or could there be low compression and perfect starting?
thanks for all the input

Yes, there can be low compression in at least one cylinder and the car could still start ok, so long as the glow plugs are working well.
Had that happen with the first engine I had in my 81SD. Engine would start just fine and run ok, except for a smoke cloud.
Best to run a compression test and get the facts. New these engines will show 425 lbs compression. They will continue to run until the compression drops below the 225 range, but probably will not run well.
I have been told just let em run until they get to where they won't start any longer. Not sure about that, but it can be done.

Soot build up in turbo?

Our 300 CD only gets used about ten miles per day in traffic week in and week out. Lots of soot on start up and acceleration. THINK this is due to soot building up in the turbo...seems far less pronounced if the car is given a good hard run on the highway from time to time.
