More 603 skipping problems.
My car is still skipping, when I start it, but it only does it for the first minute or so. The skipping seems to be more time related than temp related. If I let it sit overnight it skips real bad, but today after letting it sit for 3 hours at work it didn't really do it. I'm thinking it is fuel related, I just replaced the injectors, glowplugs, delivery valve seals, and all the filters and fluids, but no improvement. I think maybe it's loseing its prime, is there a way to check this or any other ideas? IP? Help I really want to fix this the car sounds like a junk when I fire it up. Other than that it runs great, tons of power and it idles really smooth once it's done skipping.

Guy,
Usually misfiring right after start is caused by a non functioning GP. Since you have all new ones, I would connect a voltmeter, ammeter or test light (ammeter is best) to each one to see if all are working. You can connect to one at a time in the ~ 40 seconds that the GP are energized before they automatically shut off. P E H |

Is there alot of smoke associated with the skipping?

Though are cars are very different in many ways, it seems they have one thing in common...they both run on 5 cylinders.
Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I also have heard of the o-rings leaking on 603's. Do you have a good mechanic that you could take the car over to to have him listen to it? It would only cost a small fraction of what it costs to "throw" parts at the problem. Good Luck David

Want,
THe 603.xxx engine is a 6 cylinder and a completely different engine from the 617.xxx 5 cylinder engine. Its not like the 240D to 300D where just one more cylinder was added. P E H Last edited by P.E.Haiges; 04-28-2004 at 07:57 PM. |

Thanks guys, yes the bottem of the injecton pump is leaking. I am currently running Delo 15W-40 in it now, I really don't think the noise is oil related, I'm thinking fuel or IP pump. How much does it cost to get the IP pump checked? I know of a good mechanic who seems to know his stuff, maybe I'll give him a try. It does smoke when I start it cold, grayish smoke. I don't know if it smokes to much or not but it clears up really quick. When I'm driving the car theres no smoke. I really think it's more time related than temp related, but I'm not sure I hope it's not a bad glow plug, I don't want to take the manifold off again, but I will check them.
Thanks diesels are new to me so problems can be frustrating.

Hello
I too have a misfire problem when starting cold. All glow plugs are new and OK. The engine always starts fine, even in minus 30 degrees Celcius. On startup it is «silent» and smooth as long as the glow plugs stay on (there is up to 60 seconds afterglow on that model). As soon as the glow plug go off (easy to see at night when the lights get brighter), it becomes noisy and starts to misfire, smoke and smell unburned fuel. The problem is more accurate in cold weather and, I guess, with winterized fuel. Chain stretch is less than 1 degree and static timing in right on the spot. No error code from the EDS control unit. Compression needs to be checked, but it takes no oil and it starts easily. The injectors have been rebuilt 50 000 km ago and it didn't cured the problem. In fact, the engine is noisier with the new injectors. I've changed the rubber and copper seals of the delivery valves without much improvement. DDH, you are right : it is an embarrasment to start it up if anybody is around!

Dieseldiehard,
But if you do the valve adjustments yourself, they don't cost anything in money, just some of your time. And without hydraulic valve lifters, there are 12 things less to go wrong in the engine. P E H |
