You can get the factory w124 service CD's off Ebay. I paid around $25 for my set. I know my set covers the '94 and '95 E300 Diesels.

Oil weight is determined by season and climate. The weight should match your temperature range. There are charts available most everywhere that will indicate the temp range for the various available weights.

I don't want to start on oil thread here, but I do want to make sure that you know that there is oil that is especially formulated for diesels. Although many oils have a diesel rating (such as CF, CG, etc.) these are not necessarily especially formulated for the unique needs of your diesel engine.

The oils I speak of are called Universal grade and include:

Chevron Delo
Mobil Delvac
Shell Rotella T

If you want synthetic universal grade, Mobil Delvac One and also Shell Rotella has a synthetic formula.

These oils are better prepared to deal with the unique soot dispersal problems found in diesel engines.

Hope this helps,

Larry,

I am going to have to take issue with you on your comment:

"Although many oils have a diesel rating..."

Just kidding!!

The owner's manual should say what weight of oil to use. Are you sure you looked carefully? There should be a temperature vs. oil weight chart somewhere in the back of the manual. I suspect the requirements are the same as for my 87 300D. I use 15W-50 Mobil 1 synthetic. 15W-40 is good too and both are officially good down to 5F, and possibly lower with the synthetic.

You'll have to call MB about the window sticker.

I have the identical car and you are right, the owners manual does not specify which oil or weight to use except to say "Use Mercedes Recommended Oil".

I use Mobil 1 0W40 Year-round. This oil is recommended by Mercedes for our Diesels, and I found it to be an excellent oil both summer and winter.

In fact Mercedes sells Mobil 1 0W40 in its parts department. I however buy it at Wal-Mart. much cheaper.

Jay,

To answer your questions- I think Chevron Delo 400 (15W40) available at Walmart in 1 quart and 1 gallon containers is a very good Diesel rated oil.
For synethetics there are several good ones- Mobil makes a Delvac 1 which is a diesel Mobil 1. In our area I'm finding Motol(sp?) which is meets the new VW 505.01 (requirement for the 2004 VW diesels).

you'll find more oil advice in the archives than anything else!! Everyone has a reason why a different product is better=)

If you can't find Mobil Delvac 1, you may want to consider Mobil 5w-40 Truck & SUV synthetic. It has the same specs and is becoming available in local auto parts stores at $5 a quart.

Larry, you mentioned Shell Rotella synthetic formula. Is the 15/40 a GOOD oil. The reason that I ask is Walmart has it on sale for $12.84 a gallon. Is that a good price?

Jay, you really need to use the search button and read up on at least some of the discussion of oils and trust me they have been discussed to death. But the short answer to your question is that Shell Rotella Synthetic is an ok oil, but not a true synthetic, hence the lower price. Dino Rotella is ok too, but not as good as other dino oils.

This oil is NOT recommended for diesels, its a gasser oil. Sure it will work but it's additive chemistry is not designed specifically for diesels, like Mobil Delvac 1 is. I'd sooner use rotella T dino oil than mobil 1 0w40.

Jay - Look for a CI-4 rated diesel oil. CI-4 is the API's most up to date/advanced spec for diesel rated oils. While your engine doesn't require it, use the best stuff, it doesn't cost any more.

Commonly available and good CI-4 dino oils that you can't go wrong with:
Chevron Delo 15w40
Shell Rotella T 15w40
Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15w40
Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40

Commonly available CI-4 Group 3(petroleum basestock) "synthetics" which will also work very well:
Shell Rotella T synthetic 5w40
Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w40
PetroCanada Duron 5w40

Available CI-4 Group 4 (PAO/Ester base stock) premium synthetics:
Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 (my favorite)
Mobil 1 *new* Truck & SUV (RELABLED DELVAC 1, CONFIRMED BY MOBIL!!!!!!!!!!)
Amsoil HDD 15w40 (great choice in warmer climates, cost effective)
Amsoil Series 3000 5w30
Redline 15w40

Hope this helps Jay. Just know that you can change your oil twice as often with dino or half as often with synthetic with the same results. You can evaluate from there how much your free time is worth...
