part identification

Trying to figure out what a certain part is.

Front passenger side fender, directly behind the headlamps. Two vacuum lines in and I think two electrical. Makes a clicking sound when I preglow.

No idea what this is.

Are you sure that there are vacuum lines? This sounds like the glowplug relay. If it is, there is a plastic cover that you can grab and pull right off.

Good luck,

SWMBOs 84 300D and Thing One's 85 300TD both have that thing too. It's not a glow relay but something to do with the electrically controlling the vacuum for some of the pollution control gizmos.

I thought they were vacuum lines...
one goes some place under the air filter. One to some place on the front left of engine.

Will take a look in a few min.

Still dealing with no start issues. I'm off to go grab a thermostat, a few glowplugs, a blade fuse, a and some vac tubing.

No. I know that is the relay. That is on the drivers side (Right, in us). Looking in engine compartment from front, it;s on the left.

I'd love to post pics, but since this car seems to eat most of my $, I can't buy a digital camera...

Ok, Ok. I picked up on the post by Mr. Bible. NO $$, we can all understand, I hope. Here is the passenger side of a 1984 300SD. I don't remember what's on the passenger side of a 240d.

If none of these look familiar, maybe I can't help. Difference between 240D and 300SD. Sorry.

Looks similiar to the last pic there.

I'll try to wrangle up a digital camera and see what I can do.

Ok, that is a 100% electrical fitting. If that is where you are heaing a clicking from there, checkfor tightness/corrosion. But....................let's back up here. what problem are you having? Describe in as much detail as possible. Was this sudden onset or did it result from a gradual progression? Any warning signs? What have you checked so far to rule out causes?

Forums like this are a great resource, but the more you information you give the more you will get back. I am not flaming you, but your original post was "what is this."

It clicks. I thought it was just during preglow, but it tends to do it intermintently while running.

I've been having issues starting. Just replaced thermo and will be doing glow plugs tomorrow.

I was just wondering what this was, and what it does, and if it has any relation to starting issues.

PS. I'm doing glow plugs cos i replaced mine in july. Had problems starting then. Let the local shop talk me into buying Autolite plugs. Started fine for about 2 months. Then wouldn't start again. Haven't driven it much this winter. Now need to get it running again, so I'm going with the Bosch plugs to see see if that helps.
