Steering lock assembly question
My questions is in reference to a 1985 300SD. Notice the steering lock in the pic. The eletrical (tiny) box attached (where the screw driver is pointing) has TWO sets of wires coming out of it. One is the normal connector that can be hooked in or removed. The one in question is soldered.
Both Performance products and Fastlane reference the steering lock as identical parts for the 123 and 126. In taking them apart, I noticed that such is the case BUT the 123 only has the connector and not the soldered wires. The end facing you is the connector end while the soldered wires are coming out the back. Does anyone know what that is? Thanks Don

no data
Hello Don
Tried looking it up in AllData, no data. It tells me nothing. I will try to access mine tonight if possible for an answer. Have a great day.

Just a guess, but could be alarm system related. The factory alarm was optional on early years, but standard on later years, probably 86+. You might want to see if there is a different version for a later, say 1989, W126.

going to try running without it and seeing if it makes a difference. it doesn't look too major and i'd love the alarm to be disabled since its annoying. always gets stuck.
thanks don

Make sure the headlights aren't flashing. My partner used to drive his 190E with the lights flashing all the time due to a defective alarm.

Yes!
They were flashing until I pulled the fuse. So something is defective. Thanks Don

So now you have no headlights? Did you see my post a few days ago about the alarm system? If you find the module, you can simply unplug it and all will be back to normal.

Rick:
Yes, I got your last reply from a week ago, but after tearing up the floor carpet, couldn't find anything to unplug, so I went with the fuse. Can't remember if it disabled the lights or not. Thanks for the link. I'll look in the 'seat well' next. This SD stuff is a bit stretching for a 123 guy who just likes nuts and bolts. Electrical is not my game. Appreciate the help along the way. Don

I've been wrong many times before, but I believe that switch tells you if your key is left in the "ignition" by activating a buzzer in the convenience module.
Alarm module: make sure you are looking under the false firewall right where a tall passenger's feet would be.

Now that would be good news since I always leave my keys in the ignition. I simply carry two and lock it while she idles away. Music to live by....
