once you own a benz
i got my 300sdl for a very decent price ($2500). i knew i would have to get a few thing checked out, and i did. the guy i bought the car from has another 85 model diesel benz. i do want to have a second car and it's kinda hard to get anything else once you've owned a benz. i don't expect the 85 benz to be perfect but i do need a car i can depend on. should i take a chance or should i just get a nice basic dependable ride. by the way the he wants $2000 for the 85 model.

Yeah, I own four of the things now!
Just check it out like any other used car. Not much difference between the two except for the 617 in the 85. A bit less power, a bit rougher, and more oil consumption. Otherwise very similar for endurance. Peter

1985
ez rider,
Is the 1985 Mercedes Benz a 126 model, or a 123 model? Most of us here at the forum are quite aware of the differences twixt the two.........however, the 126 is BIGGER, with more power accessories etc.....it being an "S" class vehicle. While the 123 is a smaller 4 door (or even a coupe)......[actually, the 126 was available as a coupe, ie: 560Sec and 380 Sec]*** The 123 series MAY be described as a PERHAPS more utilitarian vehicle............with each of the DIESEL models having virtually identical 617 series drivetrains........ Many regard the 617 drivetrain (cast iron block AND head) to be the longest lived of the NON-4 CYLINDER cast iron diesel models. Check for RUST etc, and the usual drivetrain issues...Use the SEARCH feature. Best wishes always, and lets keep those diesels humming! spo out |

I believe the OM617 is the ONLY non-4-cylinder model in the OM61x engine range that is cast iron! So that's the same as saying its only as good as itself.:p Then again, if you mean in comparison to the OM60x engines, they are just as tough. The OM603 are just as tough as the OM617.
The OM617 is the same as the 4-cylinder models except for an extra cylinder being tacked on. |
