Interesting Power Service Treatment Effect
So, with the new 1984 300SD, I put in a full 16-oz white bottle of Power Service with the last tank. This was done because I noticed some flecks in the original fuel pre-filter (as received). My assessment was algae/fungus in the tank along with some amount of water. Power Service removes water.
The pre-filter, primer pump, fuel hose and spin-on filter have been changed. The car has no problem running (ahem) something alledgedly like 80-mph, driven by a good friend of mine. After about 3/4 tank of this, the car now has developed an engine shake at idle in drive. Before this it was quite smooth. Do you think there is any cause and effect with the Power Service treatment? I have my theory but want to hear any other ideas on this. I think somehow the Power Service has cleaned up the injection pump and now I need the new rack dampener pin because the rack is more free to shake. Is that likely? Ken300D

I had the exact same thing happen with my Ford 6.9 diesel. After adding a double dose of Power Service, my idle became rough. Then, after burning off one tank and refilling without Power Service it smoothed out. If I switch back to the tank that still has the additive it will idle rough again. I suspect it's the timing, which is set for the cetane number of the fuel without the additive. I'm going to burn half the other tank and refill which will reduce the additive level to normal instead of double and see how it runs.
One thing I did notice right away was hardly any smoke even at full throttle and without a turbo no less. Also more pep. So I would still like to use the PS but maybe not as much. Another thing to note, a week after the Power Service was added I had return pressure problems and found the return check clogged with brown goo. I took the top off the pump and there was a tiny bit of goo there too which I sucked out with a turkey baster. After that it ran great except for the rough idle on the treated tank. Brian

Yes, I did go a little heavy on the Power Service because I wanted to remove as much water as possible. So maybe there is something to having TOO MUCH of this additive.
Filled up again from nearly empty this morning and will know soon. The first impression was that it seemed OK on the drive in to work. Looking underneath the vehicle I can see scuff marks that indicate the tank strainer has been removed and replaced. Hopefully most of the tank growth has been previously removed. Thanks for the suggestions. Ken300D

I didn't put it together until reading this post but I've had the same problem with a new shake at idle. I used gray bottle of P.S. and layed it on thick. Filters didn't look too bad when I changed them out last weekend. I even filled up the screw on filter with straight P.S. Idle is better now with new filters but wonder if it loosens up a lot of gunk in the tank?

The car is back to normal now with the fresh tank of fuel.
Very interesting to see how a small amount of fuel additive can have such a large effect. I guess the maximum that should be put into the 300SD tank is 8-oz. instead of all 16-oz. Lesson learned. Ken300D

Ken, I add 4 oz at every fill-up, about once every 12 to 14 days and my 83 sd runs great, no problems with idle or start up. I'm very happy with power service. steve

Power service
A friend, also my mechanic, who does a lot of fleet service on diesels of all kinds, swears by a mix of 8 oz of power service and 8 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil. I've added it to about every fourth tank for the past year, and it has reduced the smoke and increased power in my '84 300SD with 195k miles on it. Runs smooth, idles smooth, more power.
