VeeDubTDI,

Responded to you by Private Mail.

Let us know how it turns out, especially how the vehicle looks if you see it. I'm curious about the interior condition.

will do

The seller hasn't yet responded to my e-mails, so I'll give him a call tonight.

I'll definitely take pictures and post about the condition of the vehicle. I'm expecting it to be in really rough shape, but we'll see.

I went with VeeDubTDI to check out this car... The seller must have forgotten to mention the seats are mostly beind held together with duct tape, and the roof is covered with snow in the photo to mask the fact that the paint has disappeared from it.

He wasnt lying about it mechanically.. no fluid leaks, ran great, but damn... that body and interior rivals las vegas street whores who are able to get 10% senior discounts everywhere they go.

Oh well, Its no longer for sale. Maybe VeeDubTDI will entertain us with some photos of his new beater.

What's a 300 sdl in exellent shape worth? say 85 K all records, clean, A/C orig w/r12, no rips, no wear etc. A car that can be traced via personal talk to original? no, I'm not telling you where it is. Seller wants big bucks. What's big bucks for this? I am trying to avoid an ls400.

It's always good to have something that you can just drive up to the front of the Wal-Mart parking lot and take the first narrow space available.

Besides, the engine in that thing would probably be worth over $4000 to someone with a nicer car and blown engine.

Assuming new seat covers in the front, how is the rest of the interior? Would it be respectable inside with new seat covers?

We live close enough to the Potomac German salvage yard that I bet a new hood might be do-able. Possibly any W126 hood would work, not just from an SDL.

Like I said, I'd have gone for it except for the already diesel overdose.

Where is it?

About how much is the seller asking? There was a 97k mile SDL on autotrader.com, probably still listed. They want $8,500 for that one. I would say in the ball park of 8-9k. There are not to many people who want an old diesel MB so if the price is very high just wait a while. Or tell me where it is.

actually, 80% of the damage is in the rear seat. The entire top of the seat is destroyed and has been repaired with about 12" of duct tape. It really needs an entire rear seat, the fronts are ok without covers as long as you dont like perfection.

picked it up last night with VeeDubTDI. the seller wouldnt sell it for 2000, he wanted a solid 2500, but after much arguing, walked away with the car for 2100.

Its a rather nice car, quickly got it up to 110mph on the highway, smooth and solid, super quiet for the speed. No other problems..

Good find for the price.

Thumbs up Matt likes to exagerate...

The leather isn't that bad. The only thing wrong with the back seat is a 5" strip of duct tape going across the top of the seat (over the headrest holes). The leather in back is fine. The leather on the front center armrest is dry and cracking. The front seats are okay, but not great. Both front seats will need new springs.

It drives like a dream, smooth as glass at 105 mph. Acceleration is pretty good. It could probably use an intake manifold cleaning since the EGR has been operating for the past 266,000 miles. I've disconnected it now.

The engine has a few small leaks... nothing major, and nothing that I haven't seen most other Benz engines do.

The rear differential will be getting new synthetic fluid soon, as it has a few vibrations at certain RPMs. Tranny and engine will probably get non-synthetic fluids, as i'm concerned about changing to synthetic at a quarter million miles. What do you guys think? The best thing about the engine is that it does not have residual pressure in the cooling system in the morning. Great news!

The paint is fine on the car except for the hood and roof. The clear coat is coming off of both, and the paint below is fading. I've been told I can fix it with 2000 grit sand paper and some other things. I don't know if i'm even going to worry about it.

Overall, I'm not complaining. I picked it up for $2000, and it seems worth it for a car that runs and drives perfectly, and needs a bit of cosmetic work.

Oh yeah, the hood ornament needs to be replaced. It looks weird without an aiming device.

I'll post pictures tomorrow probably. I still need to take pics of the interior and engine. Until then...

Oh yeah, one more thing... the tachometer is 500 RPMs low. Any solutions to this, or would it involve a new instrument cluster? A new cluster was installed by the original owner (a long time ago) because the clock stopped working. If it helps any, the tach is at -500 rpms when the engine is off... maybe the needle just needs to be pulled off and repositioned... I don't know.
