88 560sel going to 90-93 300D 2.5 Turbo
I have done a lot to my 1988 560sel. The 560 is solid. I love the car - the gas prices in Ca. are killing me.
Before I make the choice to sell the 560. I would like to know if anyone has made a similar choice. Are you happy or do you miss the room and power? Thank you Nick Mendoza |

Nick,
If you like the room of your 560SEL, consider a 300SDL. All the room and most of the ammenities of a 560SEL and comparable performance to a 300D 2.5 except for the mileage. It should be good for 25mpg, not quite the 30mpg of a 300D 2.5. A W124 is much more nimble than a W126 offset by complexities to service. The ACC system stands out. If you're used to the rear seat of a LWB W126, you'll wonder how a W124 can be a luxury car My love for the back seat room of my SDL is anecdotal since I've never ridden back there. Sorry, I am not ready to sell it yet.
I have just about finished the car. All I need to do is replace a lifter and fix the air cond. I want to enjoy the car for a little bit. If I do change my mind I will let you know.
I spoke to a Mercedes sales guy. He said that they do not make them like that any more. Solid steel! He also said that all the new ones are made with alum. and have plastic screws. If you find one --Have a mechanic look at it before you buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I looked at many that were done. Bad interiors, no upkeep and one that smoked after every stop sign. I have a black one. It was 104 on Wednesday. It was hot. Something to think about. luck Nick Mendoza |
