run-away
Keeping a Halon fire extingisher handy can do the trick on a run away. Just blast it into the intake and it displaces the air.
Makes the motor stall out. I had to do this on 2 run aways. One was a 84 300d with a bad pump, the other was a 8v92 Detroit Diesel in a Freightshaker with a oil leak. Worked both times with no damage to the motors. Makes one heck of a mess of the engine bay however. Sorry about your motor loss. Doing a pump on a 123 may suck, but doing one on a 140 s350d is a whole lot worse! My god! Just thinking about it makes me run to my 115. 240D w/ 4-Spd. I can have the whole motor out in less than 2 hrs. Takes 2 hrs just to get the intake off a 603 motor. DR.D |

If the fuel line were clamped shut with a vice grips, could the injection pump still suck the remaining fuel out of the line or would the vacuum in the line cause the fuel to stop flowing in a second or two even if there was still fuel in the injection pump?

Again, I am told, and I believe that there is enough in the pump, prefilter and main filter to run the engine long enough for destruction.
The lines must be loosened at the injectors or the high pressure lines to the injectors at the pump. These lines are too hard to clip with wire cutters. I believe the only hope is like psfred offered immediately after I posted. If you have a 17MM box end in your hand, the engine is cold and you are willing to soak yourself with diesel fuel, you can shut it down. When this happened to me, I thought of loosening the injector linese and a 17MM box was very close at hand. I did not do this because at that time I thought that diesel fuel everywhere would be a serious fire hazard. It was pointed out that the engine is still pretty cold at that point. As long as it doesn't throw a rod generating a spark, I think this would have worked. Unfortunately, this engine won't give me a second chance. I had more very bad career news this week, so I think the engine was just the beginning of my bad luck. I am convinced that it will get better sooner or later. Have a great day, |

But can the injection pump, pump out fuel if no fuel is coming in?

Personally I don't have a big complaint with working on my 300D.
I moved up from a Diesel VW, now THAT is a PITA. Sure some minor things could be given some room in the engine bay, but compared to other cars the 300D has lots of room, if I need to get to something that is in a tight spot I have tools that can get in there, or I just remove the offending part that is in the way. For example, I just got done replacing a bad vacuum line that ran from the ignition to the back of the IP. The little yellow shutoff valve was making it hard for me to push on a chunk of tubing (not vacuum, a extra chunk of braided fuel line, it was a hair small, but works) so I just took it off and put it back on, didn't take me but a minute. Also Greg, thats a great Idea about the quick disconnects for the radiator, if this summer I have any overheating problems (dear god I hope not, I already had that last year ) I'll look into it

$#^*ing 5 cylinder engine, I spent 5 hours trying to get the starter out. 3 hours working on getting the bolts out, and 2 hours trying to get it out from the engine compartment. I finally realized that if I took the alternator off, the starter can come out that way. Then I spent 3 hours trying to get the oil filter housing off, and I striped out all the allen head bolts, so I need to get some new ones. This is why it took me 3 hours to get it off. At least I have all the parts off now, now later this week I can put the new ones on, and it should take me probally no less than an hour to get everything back together. At least I figured out how everything goes together and comes apart. Next time it will only take me 2 hours to do all this work

Kirk said it all. The 5 cylinders are a piece of cake if you have good tools. I'll bet your allen wrenches say Taiwan on them somewhere. Taiwan is one of many countrys that make the tools out of hardened butter. If you are intending to do your own maintenance, you are are already saving plenty of money so reward yourself and invest in some professional tools. A good set of tools will cost you about $20.00 per wrench instead of $20.00 per set, but you will use them forever. Also there are some neat tools that you won't see in cheapie sets like a 1/4 inch drive 5mm and 6mm allen which are perfect for that oil filter project. I know you are probably going to say of course I have good tools, because I'm a professional mechanic, but that is not the reason. I love to cook as a hobby. My pots and pans run between $100.00 to $150.00 each. I slowly add to my collection. They are fine tools and a joy to cook with over that plastic handled crap from KameApart. Treat yourself to collecting good tools. You deserve it Peter

Most of all my tools are Craftsman, but my allen wrenches do say Taiwan on them . I just bought a cheap set to do this work, but I do plan on buying good ones later this Summer .

I have a set of allen head sockets that say Craftsman on them. They are not the very best tools, but I have found them adequate. Have removed/ installed three MB five cylinder engines and another transmission with them. So far no strippees. Not bad for these old diesels with stuck bolts. |

I wonder if the problem people have with servicing the 617 is that it's in a 123. Not that I don't like the 123, just seems that I can't associate with the serviceability problems. Sixto 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |
