accumulater installation

After doing a search on accumulater installation I didn't get a clear answer if a "shadetree" installation is possible without special tools and equipment. I have a good range of air and hand tools and do most of my repairs .
I would appreciate any help and tips you guys offer. Thanks to everyone who spends their time helping us wannabes and hobbiests.Without this forum I would be in trouble.
Thanks,Pklarc

I assume you are referring to the accumulators on the wagon rear suspension. If so...

It's an easy job and shouldn't take more than a hour but it is a bit messy. You can get access to the spheres without having to remove anything else. It's a good idea to clean around the spheres and hoses before you start. Jack the car up or put on ramps (it's not necessary to take weight off the suspension). open the bleed nipple on the levelling valve and bleed off any fluid pressure. It will gravity feed a bit so don't worry if you get it all. Loosen to hand tight the hydraulic hose fittings on the accumulators but not too far or else you'll get an oil bath while you remove the bolts that hold the sphere in place. I recommend you use a flare wrench on the hydraulic lines so you don't strip the fittings(I don't remember but I think it's 10mm or 12mm). Now unbolt the sphere and unscrew the hydraulic lines. Screw the hoses hand tight into the new sphere and bolt it in place. Don't forget to tighten the hose fittings after you bolt the new sphere in. Also be careful to keep the line ends clean, you do not want to get any dirt in the system. Repeat on the other side. Enjoy the nice oily sheen you'll now have all over your hands and arms. The system will self bleed but you can help it along by jumping up and down a bit on the rear with the engine running. Have fun!

accumulater installation

Thanks IRG,
I really appreciate the quick reply and thorough explanation. Doesn't sound too difficult just messy. Like most chores" the hardest part is the dread"
If we don't get too much rain this week- end I'll give it a try.
Thanks again, Pklarc

accumulator replacement

After you replace the accumulators make sure ride height is correct. I had a problem with excessive inner wear on the rear tires after rebuilding a rear suspension. I ended up getting the wife, a couple kids, and two bags of cement to set in the 3rd seat so I could corrected ride height adjustments. Since then it's been great.
