2 Gallons or 7.4 quarts?
I am just wondering how many people out there just pour in 2 full gallons of motor oil as opposed to measuring 7.4 quarts?
Please, lets not creatively find a way to make this into a Dino VS Synthetic thread...

What are you putting it into? My 300D manual says 7.9 US quarts for an oil/filter change so two gallons seems good to me... RT

7.4 quarts is right for your car, the 300D 2.5 Turbo. So I guess it'd be fine to make things easier and fill it with 7 and a half.

I don't really do my own work, but I take two gallon jugs to my independent shop and invariably they leave one in the trunk with a little bit in the bottom, maybe half a quart.

Well,
Thanks for all the responses. I asked this question because I have read many posts saying that individuals were putting in 2 full gallons. It sounds like the 123's take 7.9 qts while the 124's take 7.4 qts. If that is true, I guess my question is answered.

I don't know if its just something with the 240Ds but if I fill to the top mark it seems the oil level drops to the midpoint in no time. It then stays there for a long time. I put in 6 qts at oil change time and don't add till its down to the low mark after sitting over night.I have no idea where the oil above that mid point goes but I use allot less oil since I figured that out. ![]()

If you overfill, the "excess" will burn off in no time from frothing or something like that. There isn't enough difference between 7.9 qt and 8 qt to bother, but a half quart will overfill. This used to cause a number of oil consumption complaints from people who insist on having the oil up to the top mark all the time -- always wait until you hit the lower mark (or the oil level light starts to blink once in a while) before adding a full quart.
On the 603, the oil fill was changed from 8.5 qt to 8.0 quart to eliminate this problem. Oil shouldn't go all the way up to the top mark. Just be glad you don't have the M117 -- 9.5 qt with oil cooler drain....! Peter

![]() Before I got the Benz, I had a Ford E-350 with the same 6.9l engine, and was driving to SoCal a couple times a month (my girlfriend lived down there before moving up here with me), and between fuel ($60 to $80 per fueling; got 500 miles to each fill-up) and changing the oil once a month, I wound up dieting whether I wanted to or not...

I used to add 8qts to my 300d with a filter change and it would be right on the max fill mark. It would drop to between the low and max mark in about 150 miles and "mark" her territory when I stopped. So somewhere in this forum someone mentioned adding only 7qts with a filter change which puts the oil at half way between the marks and I only add around a qt. between oil changes. She still lightly marks her territory, I think the D in 300d actually stands for drip, but not near as bad as if I add 8qts.
