I loved this car, just bought it. Put a lot of work into it.
I noticed oil pressure at 2marks going down highway 4th gear at 70mph yesterday, thought it was odd. But I had been under car and saw no oil leaks,
Today on way home, heard horrible rotational rattling sound from engine compartment, ;something was striking something. Thought it was loose exhaust.
Suddenly hear something pop and drop from engine compartment, which i ran over and then engine shut down.
Oil puddle underneath car when I pulled over on highway.Small fireball explosion from oil or diesel. No oil in crnakcase.
Broken meatl fragments from something underneath fuel pump.
ENGINE SIEZED. Won't turnover. I cant believe this. No oil in pan, can anything be done? %&*(()))@$% Heartbroken.

Dear Heartbroken,
Like my Daddy used to say,"A car will never leave you stranded without a warning...you just have to notice things". The low oil pressure yesterday was your warning. Was the oil level okay yesterday? Did you check it?
A 240D going 70mph is working pretty hard. Anything below "pegged" on the oil pressure gauge means trouble. Chances are,the damage had already been done when the low oil pressure occured. It's toast....time for a replacement engine.

You will need a new engine. I'll bet the engine was using some oil and was very low on oil that caused this. Our shop loaner 240 has 380,000 miles on the same original engine. But very well cared for.

I own an 83 240D with 170K miles. To my amazement, it seems to run stronger as it gets older. Mercedes eliminated the oil pressure gauge in its newer models. They claim drivers don't look at it anyways. Did you prove them right? 70mph in a 240D is about 3,500rpms. The oil pressure needle should have been maxed long time ago. I don't think the car is worth a new engine unless the body, which by now is 17 years old, is in perfect shape. And the reason for this is a new, and eventually well cared for, MB Diesel engine is going to last you longer than... Why don't you find another well cared for 240D?
