80 amp or 30 amp strip fuse

Hoping this is not a really stupid question ... The glow light on my 87 wagon is intermittent and based on the previous thread by turbodiesel300 I would also like to replace the strip fuse in the relay ( I have already replace the glow plugs). Called the dealer and they said 30 or 80 amp? I said i have no idea. Is the 30 amp fuse for the latter diesels say from '91 on and 80 amp for us old guys??

TIA

The glow-plug relay should be 80 amps. A thirty amp would blow as you are probably pulling something like 60 amps.

I'm suprised they asked such a question. Unless there is another fuse in the system forgot about.

80 amp

I do not know about any 30 amp fuse associated with the glow plugs. It is the 80 amp in the relay box. (I have a 60x).

The glow plug system uses an 80 amp strip fuse. On the '87 300D Turbo the fuse holder is mounted in the engine compartment on the top of the left front wheel next to the larger glow plug relay box. The fuse is in a small black plastic rectangular holder with a top that flips off. The W124 also uses a similar looking 30 amp fuse in a different location. I have never heard of people having trouble with those. If you look closely you'll see the strip fuses are stamped 80A or 30A so there won't be any confusion.

Thanks for all replies...

Just got back from the dealer and sure enough only an 80 amp fuse for the glow plug relay. I swear I told him this on the call. Turns out there is a 30 amp strip fuse he pulled up for an aux fan.

FWIW, the dealer wanted $2.45 for a single 80 amp fuse (highway robbery). Luckily I go by often enough that Eric who I usually deal with gave them to me for $1 so I bought 4.

Thanks Again.
