Installing 300d starter in 240d ?

Is the 300d starter heavier duty than the 240d ? I plan on replacing starter soon , it is starting to grind pinion teeth off . I have replaced a few starters in my pickup trucks they were always easy, this will be the first MB one for me . Being an auto trans, no push starting this baby. Is the heavier duty starter needed ? Hans

The starters are the same. The only difference is that as most other things on the five cylinder compared to the four, it is much harder to work on.

You can replace a 240D starter in little more than no time. The five cylinder requires more extensions, universal joints and some extra swear words that are not required when changing the same starter in the four.

BTW, if the starter is doing nothing when turning the key, not even clicking, you may only need to replace the solenoid.

Good luck,

Larry, Is the starter on the Turbo stronger? Is that what he would need to do to upgrade/improve ? Will it fit the same hole ?

The same starter goes into 240D, 300D, 300D turbo. The only difference is that there is an early and a late starter for the 123 diesels. Do not interchange them, they will bolt in place, and I think even work in the wrong vehicle, but there is a slight mechanical mismatch that causes problems.

The later ones are indeed higher power, but it is the same starter whether it is in a 240D or a late 300D turbo.

If you need to know at what year they changed, check the parts listings in fastlane or performance products catalog.

Have a great day,

gears

Are the teeth on the starter softer than the teeth on the flywheel? If not, his flywheel will look just as bad as the starter gear.
Just wondering?

Thanks Larry, My starter grinds and makes wild noises a couple times a week .This has started a couple of weeks ago . I know its the pinion gear ready to give up the ghost. I checked in the catalog and the 300 and 240 later ones are the same except for CA. So they were updated from the earlier models. I had an F-350 that I had to change the flywheel because it had a few missing teeth. Not a fun job, I hope this does not happen to the 240. Thanks again Hans.
