transmission fluid change
I am going to change the fluid and filter on my transmission, it is taking a while to get into reverse now that the weather is cooler. I searched backwards a little and think I have a grasp on what to do, but I still have 2 questions:
-how much fluid does the tranny hold? -any idea what to torque the pan bolts to? (looks like overtightening is easy and bad) thanks, Andy

Do a search for all kinds of information.
Have at least 7 qts of ATF on hand and the pan fasteners are 7 Nm. Don't forget to have some new crush rings and to drain the torque converter.

The drain plugs for both the pan and torque converter are 5 mm allen heads. At least onmy transmission they are. Definetly don't over tighten the pan bolts. Whe you go to fill the ATF, put in about 4 quarts, then start the car, and cycle the transmission throught the gears. This will pump the fluid into the torque converter. Now you can add the rest. I can't remember exactly how much it takes, I don't have the specs. in front of me.

I think it is 6.6 qts if my memory is correct, make sure not to overfill.

i have a couple questions myself on this one(sorry to intrude into your thread). First off, where is the torque converter? drain plug? second, is it a bad idea to change the fluid in a tranny with around 160k on it that has never been serviced before? thanks,
Ryan

Torque converter is directly in front of the transmission pan, there is a little "grate" for lack of a better word for it, that it is behind. You may or may not need to turn the engine over to see the drain plug in it. You can get to it easily through the grate. I don't know about the ATF change with that kind of miles, I wouldn't think it would hurt but wait for others to answer would be my recomendation.

I don't see why it would hurt to replace that old transmission fluid. You might be surprised by the difference.
I just put in Synthetic ATF and am now enjoying a smooth shifting 300CD.... however now I have a VERY BAD clunk from the rear end..whatever... if it doesn't end I might trade this thing in for a Corolla.. Just get an AT Filter Kit (it comes with all the washers to replace the old ones)

I just got through with my first oil change and was going to do the transmission fluid and filter tonight too, but before I got the drain nut (or what ever that contraption is called) on the transmission to finally break loose, the engine and transmission were too cold, so I'm waiting on another night.
I hope the torque converter doesn't take that much effort. The one on the transmission snapped loose just before the allen wrench was about to bend or break. I was using vice grips choked down on the end of the allen wrench for a cheater. I made a mistake of not ordering the gasket with the filter, hoping I could re-use the old one. I've since learned that some of the old ones were cork. Now I'm scared to take the pan off until I order one.... I quess I will wait.
