Oil Filter Housing
Hi glad to be a new member. My question is about the gasket that goes between the filter housing and the block on my 80 300sd. I have loosened all the bolts in anticipation. How hard is the housing going to be sealed to the block when I pull it off. She is about to hit 200,000 and I do not want to hurt her. That is my only leak.
Thanks Last edited by dieselman; 10-30-2002 at 12:10 PM. |

If the housing is stubborn, take a light mallet and give it a few taps, that will free it up. But it should come right off once the bolts are removed (watch the long ones). Make sure to get not only the gasket that goes between the block and the housing but also the gasket that goes between the housing and the oil pressure connection. Clean everything up really good and use a little of the Mercedes-Benz black sealer on the gaskets when reapplying everything. That way you're assured of a positive fix.

When it comes off will any parts be loose on the housing or will it come off as one unit.
Thanks again |

It'll come off as a unit, just make sure to undo the oil pressure line. Clean all gasket mating surfaces real good and again, use MB black sealer.

Oil filter housing Gasket replacment was a success. Took 4 hours to complete. Some of those bolts are hard to get a wrench on. It was worth the time. No more nasty oil spots on the rear end.
