buying '85 300TD: what to look for?

I couldn't find any FAQ on the topic, so I'll ask here.

I'm going to check out the '85 300TD wagon this weekend and don't quite know what to look for. I know that the guy has all papers and maintenance history since '85, and that it has 150K miles on it. Also, transmission has been rebuilt at 100K miles. The asking price is $3900 FIRM (and I think he will not have any problems selling it for that much). It's a Northern California car, so no rust at all.

With transmission being rebuilt, I figure I should have at least 50K problem-free miles before serious stuff starts crapping out.

Could someone give me some kind of checklist or at least name the most problem areas? Rear suspension (struts) is one (although I don't quite know how to check it), what else?

I'm kind of lazy to get it to mechanics, especially with all the maintenance history available. Would you buy one without compression check?

Thanks!

It sounds like it should be a good deal. Check the climate control system, and make sure it is functioning properly. I would also check the hydraulic fluid for the self leveling rear suspension. Check for leaks and such and make sure that it is not sagging in the rear. Also ask the owner if it has excess oil consumption, if there is, then that could be an indication of future problems.

It's not an adequate substitute for a compression and leak down check, but checking how much blow by comes out of the oil fill cap when it is removed and the engine is hot is a rough indication of internal engine condition. A lot of puffing smoke means compressed gases are getting by the rings.
Yes, I have bought cars without compression checks.

Is it actually safe to unscrew the oil cap with the engine running? (and NO, I'm not going to sue anyone )

It may be a little dirty/greasy but there is not really anything dangerous about it. Just don't be standing over the top of the opening.
