Runaway Damaged Transmission? om606, w210

Ok, I have a head scratcher. I had a 10 second runaway that seems to have resulted in my transmission not going into any gear except park. Let me explain, I installed a motor guard bypass filter on my 99 om606 w210. The oil pan didn't have good room around it to drill into on the drivers side to create a return oil hole for the fitting. So I had the brilliant Idea of making a return in the valve cover. Well I now surmise where I put that return may be a direct passage for the pcv (see pic). When I started the car it ran fine at first for a minute or two. On taking it for a test drive I made it about 100 feet and then massive smoke started rolling out and I lacked power as well as partial runaway up to 3000 rpm. There was also some hydro locking and bad knocking as well as . Smoke so thick you could not see the road. Well I made it back home. And then engine would still turn over. I added several quarts of oil (that had been lost by being sucked into the intake after filling my catch can). After I figured out my mistake I plugged that port, and added another right over the front of the timing chain gears. Ok problem fixed....I started it, catch can didn't fill up.... Idled a few minutes revving a but, still a lot of smoke... Revved a bit more and it ran away for 5 or 10 seconds, then shut itself off...I was totally unprepared for a runaway and could do nothing to mitigate in that short time. Massive grey smoke. I thought that was it for the engine. But it turned over and started on first try. Ok maybe we'll be ok. Next day(today) I went prepared to stop a runaway, car starts ok, I begin revving ever so lightly to get the rest the oil out of intake and after 5 or 10 minutes Im satisfied we're not going to have another runaway. So I go to do a test drive....and here the head scratcher part....the trans won't engage any gear. It will go into park, but every other gear is the same as neutral, no power no clutch engagement, nothing. Trans fluid is present and looks ok, scanner shows transmission is seeing the commanded gear. A few codes were present, but after cleared they did not return. Anyone have any insight into what may have happened here? Possibility the high revs destroyed tue trans pump? Any help is appreciated!

(I'm seeing max file size for jpg. is 732kb? So is it basically impossible to attach a picture or is there another way?)

I beleive I've diagnosed it.

ok, I believe I've diagnosed it, maybe someone else had a similar experience. I loosed a trans cooling line, and with the engine running in park I had no pressure, no fluid coming out. Unless Mercedes does something weird with there trans like no circulating cooling while in park, then I believe as crazy as it sounds, that the pump tabs that connect to the torque convertor sheared off during the engine overspeed. I'd've thought that mercedes would build that pump better than that. @ 200kmiles I guess it may have been time for a rebuild soon anyhow.

rebuild upgrade

While I'm rebuilding, ive read its not to hard to use clutches from the merc. v8 to build the trans up to 580 nm of torque. Is this a simple matter of what parts to install or is it more involved? or would it be just as easy to find a trans for the merc v8 and direct swap it?

How high did it rev? You say 3000 RPM, but that's a normal RPM when driving. If it went crazy high, you could have damaged the front pump or the torque converter. Even in park, if the engine is running you should have fluid pressure since the pump runs all the time.

yeah, it ran completely away, I didn't get a look at the rpm's but it was high. To clarify, when I did the test drive at first it did run up to 3000rpm and wanted to keep going, but then settled back down. The next day it was in park and I was revving the engine a little by hand under the hood, in an attempt to get the oil out of the intake. Eventually I revved it high enough where I guess the airflow carried enough oil to cause the runaway. It revved higher and higher up to a point where it seemed to top out and stayed there for maybe 10 seconds. during this time I had turned the ignition off, and was scrambling to get a screw driver to get the intake off. It eventually ran out of fuel, and eventually shut off.

Do the 722.6 transmissions have an access hole to see/drain the torque converter like the 722.3's do? If so, see if you can see the torque converter spinning with the engine running. If you can, you know it's probably the pump or TC collar that's damaged. Doesn't sound like a very fun time if it ran away like that!

It should have access and a torque converter drain plug.
