w123 Headlight upgrade Koito from Toyota Dealer

I know this has come up on the forum before, but I wanted to make it more prominent.

I wanted to upgrade my headlights from sealed beams but didn't want to spend big bucks or go to LEDs. I was looking for Hellas or Cibies, but never found any that I wanted to purchase. I've had a dozen or so sealed beams that have been pierced by rocks over the years and I didn't want to get nice H4 lenses that would be destroyed almost immediately.

Anyway, I'd been looking at the Koito lenses but someone clued me in to them being offered at Toyota dealership parts departments. I bought some and I'm so glad I did.

Part number is 81110-60P70 "HEADLAMP ASSY"

This is two 7" H4 lenses from Koito with bulbs, a relay harness (not needed for the w123 application) and a bag of zip ties. And the price? I paid $44.

This is something I can drive on without worrying too much about getting a chip in the lens as I can get a new one from Toyota.

wow thats outstanding! I am not in need of one as I'm going to sell the 300TD soon and the headlights are working fine.
I did a quick search (sorry no Amazon hits allowed)
there are dealers with them across the nation but the first one I clicked on said:
$16.49 MSRP: $23.05 You Save: $6.56 (29%)
Currently Unavailable
Due to manufacturer supply shortage, this item isn’t currently available for ordering.

Another link showed they had 133 inquiries to date.
so are these that popular?

I wish I had known when I had to replace a headlamp some time ago (too long ago to remember the year)

I called around to a few dealers as I knew the price might be a bit different depending on where I went. I chose the dealer that didn't make me show up and prepay for them. But all three dealers said they had to come in from California and would take 4-5 days.

I ordered two sets as I still wasn't sure whether it was two headlights or just one. The parts counter guy was flabbergasted that such a big box with a bit of weight to it was priced that low.

How is the illumination from them? Better or about the same?

Since I upgraded from Sylvania sealed beams and used some off brand H4 housings for a bit, I have two options to compare these to. The illumination is very bright, very clear and almost no dull spots. It feels like I've doubled the amount of illumination.

I wish I knew about this option ten years ago. I don't regret the upgrade one bit.

Undecided on this one.

If your if you get a stone in your sealed beam and the crack extends to the inside the filament quickly burns out. If that happens on the old euro type lights the separate light bulb will not burn out unless water get up in there while it is hot and cracks the bulb.

And yes, I have had that happen to a sealed beam headlight.

Martureo:
By any chance, while you were researching a source for these lights, did you also come across a part number for a corresponding kit that has the 5" x 7.25" rectangular lights that were used in some Toyota pick-ups (Hilux, Tacoma)? If not, would you be so good as to post the name of the dealer where you purchased your lights, and an internet address if possible?

Out of curiosity, are the lenses flat, like Hellas or convex, like Cibiés?

Btw, I've read that they are very good lights.

Wow this is a really neat deal. Even with bulbs.

Do you have to rewire connectors or are they plug and play with the original plugs?

The lenses are flat, which may be undesirable in some applications. But at this price and with that amount of illumination, I couldn't be bothered to care if it looks a little funny up close.

Plug and play.

They include a relay wiring harness which is to allow this to be used as an upgrade for older headlight assemblies. The thinner wiring in those harnesses might not handle the load, but for our application its unnecessary.

Pardon my ignorance, but why is the relay harness not needed on a w123?
Are the headlights already relayed in these cars?? Preliminary research seems to indicate that they are not.

The MB headlight circuits do not use relays.
The MB wiring is of a size (1.5mm,~14ga.) that is more than sufficient, by a factor of 3-4, to carry the current of even 100W H4s.
By using a relay, however, the resistance of both the dimmer & headlight switches is eliminated. The voltage at the lights will increase.
