I'm not worried about the tuning part of the deal. It's the "broken parts".

In the past, there was a messed up DEF line heater, and Mercedes wanted almost $2,000 to fix by replacing everything inside the tank. I believe there is another heater in the tank that is now bad, plus there is a leak at the connection between the heated tank line and the DEF injector line just under the car.

DEF injector line shouldnt' be a big deal since they all has to come off anyway as part of the deal.

Not only that, the tank has sat empty for 3 or 4 years...and we all know what DEF looks like when it sits...the residue in there has to be pretty ugly...

My plan up until this point was to drop that tank out of there and put a spare tire in its place...much more useful...

Point of all that being, if someone comes back and says "pay to fix all this first" then I want my car back as it is.

Don't really care about the money incentive at all, but a car with almost 100,000 that could possibly get fixed properly for no cost to me, plus a warranty...that was what drove me into the dealer after ignoring all the notices etc up to now.

And for the record...I miss my 1983 300SD! No emissions issues on that thing at all!

Pretty certain all those broken emissions parts will be replaced under the emissions update. I had some things replaced for free that needed attention not directly related to the update. Can't recall for certain, but a bolt was stripped on the back somewhere, they didn't charge for it, etc. The service manager was trying to get everything he could included in the work.

Your tune will definitely be erased as a part of the update.

Funny you mention that...although the car is pretty much clean and rust free, I had a few stuck bolts when dropping the DEF tank to repair some of the components a few years ago. I had to retap the holes to the same thread, and I had some nice hex stainless steel bolts to put in. Better quality than what was there anyway...

I am expecting the tune to be erased. I have the ability to retune it again should I have problems after the warranty on all this expires.

I'll be curious to see if the ECO start stop function defaults to "on" when I get it back...right now it is tuned to stay in whatever mode I leave it in. I like keeping it off...and used to hate having to turning it off every time I restarted the car...really annoying in DC area traffic.

As I recall from the AEM settlement documentation there are financial incentives for Mercedes to complete as many cars as possible. I think there were penalties if they didn't get to 85% of the effected cars being modified?

I'd guess that Mercedes would be willing to overlook/repair some broken components to get a car through the program.

I know of one other Bluetec owner that brought a car in with a CE light on for a fault related to the Adblue system and Mercedes completed the modifications no questions asked.

I suspect they'll repair/replace whatever is needed.

Who is doing your tuning that deletes the Adblue system and disables the auto start/stop 'feature'?

I thought I read someplace about the 85% requirement...couldn't tell you where I saw that...and it would explain why they sent someone to my door.

To answer your question, I had someone a few years ago...in Canada... write a program on a OBD device that has a small micro sd card in it. There are some other changes that could be added to the programming but when I tried to get in touch...that person seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

With respect to auto start/stop...if you have a Autel MaxiCOM device capable of coding a Mercedes you should be able to change the default values for the Eco Start/Stop to "last mode". That would mean it would stay in whatever mode you left it in when you restarted the car. I think the other options are "off" or "on".

If you ever vacation in Canada, I'd do some homework.

Well, got the vehicle back today. Took 1 week and 1 day. Everything works at no cost to me. They handed me the invoice for $0 and sent me home. Sticker under the hood, adblue in the tank that was once empty. Controller is plugged back in.

The ecu reflash did re-enable the ECO start stop function back to "always on after restart" . But other than that, I can't tell a difference after the short drive home.

Invoice just generically says "99705 Performed Emission Modification per Campaign" under parts. Also, that the injection nozzle broke and they replaced that.

So, even without a check or any other documentation, I think I made out ok.

Submitted the claim for compensation on line as directed and got a confirmation e-mail that it should be here in a few weeks.

I think you'll be happy with the mods - and it's always nice to have the extended warranty.

I'm still incredulous that the amount of pollution the car generates after the mods is significantly different than the pre AEM version of the engine.

I can detect no perceptible differences in mileage after mine was done.

The extended warranty was was got me to bite more than anything...that cover's a lot of stuff on the engine like the Turbo, valves/head, timing chain etc.

Well, I'm thinking I might be regretting to get the AEM done now. I have a check engine light for a DEF level sensor short and I don't think it is covere under the extended warranty.

203D17 The AdBluefill level sensor has a short circuit to positive.

So now that my old Adblue delete tune won't work I'm stuck. I'm working the "solution".

I believe the parts of the Adblue system are indeed covered by the extended warranty.

Well, problem sorted itself out and light went out by itself. Shows as stored but not current. I have a theory there but that's for another time.

If it comes back I'll take it in...however, reading the fine print of the warranty, not all parts of the Adblue system (read as SCR) are covered. It specifically calls out the SCR catalyst itself, DEF injector, DEF injector controller, DEF supply Module and pump. That's it.

I've been here before prior to the emissions modifcation, check engine light when DEF heater went bad and they denied coverage under the 8 yr 80,000 mile federal emissions modification. They wanted over $2,000 to replace everything including the tank. Turned out it was a heated line outside the tank anyway, and when I was fixing it myself, the tank fell and broke the connection where it connects to the injector line. That's why I tuned out the Adblue system. And life was good.

I'm also reading about folks that have had the same issue being denied coverage, some were able to argue their case and win...

I should have left it alone and not done the modification, but at least I tried to do the right thing and save the world one 2.5 gallon non-reusable plastic container at a time...

The supply module contains the DEF level sensors and DEF heater elements - I think its covered.
